The White House had announced that Jenna Bush would be teaching at a charter school in DC that housed many low-income children. AAR just announced that the school apparently was unable to accept Jenna as a teacher because even though she has a degree, she does not meet the standards for the NCLB program.

Any new teacher, or any teacher working in a Title 1 program, must meet the criteria for being "highly qualified." That means they hold at least a bachelors degree and have passed a state test of subject knowledge.

Elementary school teachers must demonstrate knowledge of teaching math and reading. Teachers in higher grades must demonstrate knowledge of the subject they teach, or have majored in that subject. Other teachers have until 2005-2006 to obtain at least a bachelor's degree, licensure and or certification.<2>

Teachers with license and certification waivers, even if for an emergency basis, will not meet this standard.

12. Liz and Rachel on AAR's "Unfiltered" gave the news just about

30 minutes ago. Evidently either they or someone connected with them called the particular school that the White House had announced as being the place of Jenna's employment and the Executive Director or some very high up person said, after being asked about Jenna..."Perhaps you should read the qualifications of the No Child Left Behind Act." And that "No" she would not be employed at the school.

ps. my brothers a teacher, it took almost 18 months for the state of nj to certify him although all his papers were in order. he was still allowed to teach based on the states inefficiencies. bush jr, may be in the same kind of situation so i wouldn't bash her too hard.

27. Interesting that no other media ever questioned if Jenna

had taken the required courses to be certified to teach. Most "education" courses are a joke but they are required for certification.

Elementary teachers usually major in elementary education, which I think is terrible because many of them are very poorly educated/ skilled in basic writing, math, and especially science. But they do need to know how to teach reading, as well as how to read, so there is a good rationale behind "education" courses.

Jenna majored in English, I think, so she'd be able to get certification to teach high school a lot easier than to teach elementary school. Most people who plan to teach take their courses while still in school, though. You'd think Laura would have told her all this.

Hey, I think it's good to teach low income kids. If only we could manage to demand that they be taught by a "highly qualified" teacher as well.

I think a degree in what one teaches should be all one needs. All those dumb education classes are just dumb. From what I've heard from Education majors, it doesn't hardly teach anything.
