Will this country remain chronically divided for at least 4 more years?

Whenever I see a useless presidential Gallup poll nowadays, all they do is prove that the country remains split in two and that its voters will vote in polls along party lines only....and not with their brains, which in effect makes almost any Gallup presidential poll meaningless. There are so many presidential polls that come out 50/50 or 51/49, when you know in your heart that it's just not the case that they should even be that close. One side will not give in to the other, even if they know they're wrong.

The ONLY Gallup poll I saw recently that hit home with the truth was one that addressed the question of divisiveness. It asked the question if the inauguration will help heal the division in the country, and 79% of the pollsters said no.

It's nothing new around here, but we all know that this president has been the most divisive in history and will probably remain this way. I believe the division is obscene and approaching catastrophic proportions like we've never seen before.

My question to you is what is the single biggest reason he's divided us so terribly? Is it religion? Is it the war? Was it something even before the war? Was it the 2000 election being stolen? Or could it be the simple fact that because he's so stupid himself he's divided the country up into stupid people vs intelligent people? What do you think it is? I'm curious.

I am not sure he is 100% responsible for it. The MSM has given him a free pass on everything with the slightest hint of accountability and since the repugs have controlled Congress, they have been able to turn their backs on anything remotely close to compromise or collaboration. "My way or the highway" comes to mind. And after a while people get tired of seeing one set of "standards" or one operating mode (for lack of a better word, I'm really frustrated as I type this).

5. it's because of how bad he is

when you're the Worst President Ever, you totally depend on division in order to accomplish any of your nasty agenda, or to get elected at all.

The majority of Bush voters are actually harmed by Bush's policies. In order to get those folks to vote for him, you have to appeal to the badness in them, like their bigotry and the manufactured sense of outrage against the dems.

10. That's why I think it'll be his own people who ultimately bring him down

and THEN maybe the country will begin to heal its division....when the other side wakes up after realizing they've taken a giant slap in the face by their own leader.

7. No, the times they are a changing

During the Kerry campaign, I became active in the local democratic activities, gave locally as well as to the national level, this morning, I was talking to my Republican die hard neighbors, I mentioned that I went to the local neighborhood meeting and met a staffer for our Democratic city council rep, he's moving to our neighborhood! She said that although her and her son have always supported the Republicans, they are the privileged aristocrats and don't live in our neighborhood and have no clue as to our needs. I think that the Republicans succeeded because they hid behind the "common man promoters" like Limbaugh who supported them 1000%. Now they are seeing the Republicans for what they really are. I think the country is coming back together. I think we are going to have less spin doctors to divide us and more reality which will unite us.

9. Combination of two things

1) Half the country keeps up with the news, half doesn't
2) Vast numbers of Americans have an intensely negative view of the Democratic Party (intense negative reaction to Kennedy & Sharpton, think Dems are "soft" re: foreign policy, think Dems are anti-military, etc.)

11. Not only divided, but becoming caustic and attacking

My husband listens to the callers on Washington Jouirnal. I heard a few comments as I was going back and forth and it seemed to me that the hatred of the left coming from the right is becoming more hateful and caustic. I heard one guy repeat Bush's mantra for justification of his war, that Bush was elected by the people who support the war, and then he went on to call the left a few not so nice names
