School board appeals ruling on evolution stickers

ATLANTA - Attorneys for the Cobb County school board are asking a federal judge to delay an order that would require them to remove more than 34,000 stickers from science textbooks that call evolution "a theory, not a fact."

The motion was filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court along with a motion to appeal the ruling against the stickers. School board attorney Linwood Gunn said removing the stickers immediately would disrupt science classes in Cobb County schools at critical testing times.

The school board on Monday voted to appeal U.S. District Judge Clarence Cooper's Jan. 13 ruling declaring the stickers are an unconstitutional endorsement of religion.

The evolution disclaimers read: "This textbook contains material on evolution. Evolution is a theory, not a fact, regarding the origin of living things. This material should be approached with an open mind, studied carefully, and critically considered."

Six parents sued to remove the stickers saying the disclaimers violated the principle of separation of church and state.

1. everything in science is a theory

it's such an idiotic debate. Creationism, or intelligent design, or whatever, has nothing to do with christianity. It just says that evolution of life followes a pattern that is not random.

What these people want though is for school not to teach their kids anything that contradicts that earth was created with humans on it 6 thousand years ago according to bible. They have their legions of pseudo-scientists that labor to come up with scientific reasons to support that. However that is totally pointless and unwinnable for them. If we say that evolution is a theory that should be taught alongside the biblical version, then you would have to teach the creation versions of koran, buddhism and other religions as well, otherwise it would be unconstitutional. Or should people in the district be able to vote on which 'theory' should be taught in their school? Well, what if you have a district with muslim majority, I don't think these people will like it when christian kids are taught Koran instead of evolution either.

There is no rational way to solve this, so looks like that this stupidity can go on forever. What they really want is for government to enforce christianity, but they can't come out and say it because country won't stand for it. So they will always be pissed off.

I think the woman who proposed sticker in the first place was not happy with it either because 'it doesn't do anything'. duh.
