Growing up in the midst of the Cold War I was told repeatedly that those ideals and goals were what made us the "good guys". The are great things to strive for that is what made it all so easy to believe. It also seemed to make sense that as the US was able to spread this around the world and was able to protect those who achieved it we would enjoy a great deal of influence and control. This morning I was informed that these are new ideas born of the vision of George W. Bush.
Everywhere I turned the message was clear-George W. Bush's powerful speech yesterday had initiated a new era of US foreign policy. NBC, MSNBC, CNN, Fox, and ABC radio news all seemed very interested in my knowing that this was "far reaching" "visionary" and "ambitious" while not mentioning what foreign policy (surely decades old) that the great George W. Bush had decided no longer worked.
I will have to surmise that the long American traditions of hegemony and strong arm tactics have thankfully been dispatched never to be mentioned again.
You learn something new every day, I guess.
