The budget deficits are what are in "crisis", not Social Security. The war in Iraq is what is in "crisis", not the "war on terror". They have gotten themselves into one hell of a fiscal crisis. They wistfully hope their charade of taxcuts will flood the Treasury with new revenues, but they know in their hearts, it is not going to happen. So they bring out the same old trick that Reagan used by telling people Social Secuirty is in crisis. They are hoping they can drag along the Democrats one more time, and raise the level of "contribution" to a level where a substantial amount of new revenues come into the Treasury without being seen as "raising taxes". Then , voila, the deficits are under control! In my opinion, that is the whole scheme behind this Social Security "crisis".
The war in a Iraq is painted by Bush and the neo-cons as one of "freedom' and "liberty" for the Iraqis. However, it is more truthfully about how America got our balls caught in a trap and we haven't yet figured out a way to extract them. All the rhetoric about "freedom" and "liberty" is simply that. It is a false cover for a disaster of a policy by Bush and the radical Republicans.
