Do you think the term "Gay Republican" is an oxymoron?

Just saw a documentary on "Log Cabin Republicans" on Trio TV, a new cable channel:

Some gay democrats who met some of them commented that it wasn't exactly a pleasant experience, and one noted that being gay and a republican is like being a jewish nazi, while a black man noted that it's like being an African-American wanting to join the KKK.

One Log Cabin Republican towards the end of the show referred to the "psychosis" of their group, another member came right out and said the term "gay republican" is an oxymoron.

Interestingly, a majority of the delegates in this group felt they were manipulated into supporting Bush in 2000, but by bringing in the right-wing KKKristian groups during his administration and in his 2004 campaign and supporting a ban on gay marriage, he had betrayed them. As a result, the group as a whole refused to endorse Bush's nomination at the Republican convention last summer.

Gov. Ehrlich did it in 2002 and 2004 Bush did it. I don't know if it is an oxymoron, but I don't see how gay person could vote for Bush after the FMA.

Doesn't he have three from the log cabin group in his administration. Didn't he start the band on marriage between gays, to get the RR uneducated to vote with him...Now isn't he backing off trying to band Gay marriage, I would say the R/R has been had>

They agree with more of the repubs issues than the dem issues. I am a democrat but I do not agree with one core issue of the democrats.
So I can kind of understand.

7. Most of them are fiscal conservatives

which, while I disagree with it, is something that's pretty mainstream. They love their tax cuts, their expensive suits, and their summer homes. I think that's really what lures them--and many of them have an avowed distaste for what they see as LGBT radicals, who they say are the dominant, mainstream voices in the subculture.

Generally, they see themselves as libertarians about sexual issues and love to talk about Barry Goldwater not caring about a person's sexual orientation. Whatever. But that is their justification, anyhow--a kind of old school conservatism that stays out of the bedroom. And that's why they hated Bush the second time around. They saw his zealotry and turned their backs on them.

So I don't think it's quite fair to say they are like Jewish Nazis or whatever. They are relatively small in number, anyhow. I'm sure Old Andy Sullivan could invite most of them to his dinner parties at his P-town home.

12. I vote for NO. Republicanism is about money and power...

...and sexual orientation is incidental unless it is being used as a voter manipulation tactic. Except for their distaste for the other Repub's use of this specific tactic because it hits them close to home, the Log Cabin Repubs share the usual fixation on money and power. Their sexual orientation has nothing to do with that.

However, when used in its older sense, meaning something more like "happy in a childlike, carefree way," "gay" IS an oxymoron IMO. They can gloat, they can smirk, they can smile their greasy smiles, but they are not innocent or wise enough to be "gay" in that sense.

14. The defections from the Log Cabin Republicans began in 2000

when the Texas delegation to the 2000 Republican National Convention got down on their knees and prayed (with their backs turned) the entire time Jim Kolbe of Arizona had the microphone. And he wasn't even talking about gay issues but policy! It was a shocking display of disrespect, crudeness, and ignorance (and prejudice). My respect for Texas went completely down the drain after seeing that on TV.

This great new site publicizes the patriotic stand taken by the representatives and senator that have stood against the Repubs attempts to crush dissent about the election fraud.

Despite all you say about the bad ol' boy Repubs of Texas -- and Molly Ivins could see you and raise you a "hunnerd" at least -- there are brave, patriotic, generous souls in that great state. Two of the representatives standing with Rep. Conyers were from Texas, Reps. Sheila Jackson Lee and Eddie B. Johnson. That's the same number as from the blue state of Massachusetts (Reps. Edward J. Markey and John Olver).

16. I have watched that documentary and came away with the same

feeling I have had for the past 35 years of discussing issues with gay people of all political views.

Whenever a homosexual tries to justify their republicianism - they are just simply verifying their own homophobia. It is difficult to understand that a homosexual can be homophobic but that is the bottom line. These are the same people who attend mainstream christian churches (instead of gay churches) hoping for acceptance.
They need to feel accepted by their biggest enemy in order to feel ok about themselves. Unfortunately, they are never accepted and thus continue to hate themselves. A very tidy package.

This past fall I had a conversation with a young christian church going repub. I suggested he ask of himself why he seeks acceptance from a group that does not want him. I told him the question in his mine should be "do they deserve my company". I reminded him that they hate everything he stands for and stand for everything he hates so why did he want to bless them by "accepting" them.

I saw him last week and he told me he had been thinking a lot, had voted for John Kerry and was now attending a gay church.

That was my impression of the film and of discussions I have had with gays for the past 42 years.

Today the only gays I know are all Democrats/Greens and despise such closet gays.

Kind of like the phenomenon in the Jewish and black communities - I don't know a single jew or black person who can stomach Paul Wolfowitz or Sharon or Condosleeza Rice or Colin or Michael Powell - all sellouts/kissasses in their views. Suffering from the same syndrome you describe.

Congratulations on that conversion you spoke of. I wish I could relate a similar story, but I've never met a Republican gay, black or jewish person in my 59 years traveling this small planet.
