Compiled by Bob Nixon
- For the second time, the Sri Lankan government blocked a high-level
United Nations tsunami relief official from visiting territory
controlled by rebel Tamil Tigers.
- Billionaire financier George Soros, a backer of global civil society movements, is leading a campaign among wealthy philanthropists to fund new progressive idea factories.
- The U.S. Bureau of Land Management has granted more than 300 million acres of public lands to ranchers for grazing their cattle, in a deal heavily subsidized by American taxpayers. Eco-activists call cattle ranching one of the most destructive uses of the fragile environment of the American west, with widespread damage to water quality, soil erosion and threats to endangered and threatened species.
