Is Kerry in favor of a draft? If not, how could he expand the military by 40,000 in his first 100 days?

DES MOINES, Iowa - Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry (news - web sites) said Tuesday he would expand the U.S. military within his first 100 days as president, contending 40,000 more troops are needed to meet America's responsibilities around the world.

Kerry told supporters at Drake University that the occupation of Iraq (news - web sites) as well as the global war against terrorism require more troops.

"In the face of grave challenges, our armed forces are spread too thin," said Kerry, a Massachusetts senator and one of nine Democratic candidates.

I am almost 100% sure that I need to do a certain amount of community service in order to graduate HS. Don't quote me, I am only a junior. I don't think Kerry is in favor of a draft. I hope he isn't.

That's what I was required to do in high school. 20 hours. Most schools have these anyway, this plan isn't anything too drastic.

Two points are made:

1. Kerry would expand U.S. troop levels.

2. 40,000 more troops are needed.

Scott Lee's eye-rollingly typical false induction is that Kerry is calling for 40,000 troops (at any costs, even!). If we want to talk about unconditional demands, let's mention Dean's call for - specifically - unconditional military at 4x times the current level and 5x the guaranteed loans, which work as de facto military aid. That is further than even Paul Wolfowitz has gone. But then again, Wolfowitz doesn't get AIPAC to foot the bill for his trips to speak with Sharon like Dean.

NONE of the candidate's positions on I/P satisfy me. Nope, not even from my guy Howard Dean. The reason I don't let that derail my support for him is because I'm not a one dimensional, single issue human being.

None of the candidates go far enough in elucidating a true recognition of the soveriegn, self determinate, and human rights of the Palestinian people. It seems that to do such these days is tatamount to the most egregious form of antisemitism - which I don't buy in the least, but there it is anyway.

Howard Dean has well articulated his position on I/P (the link to which you have been provided), but that well articulated position simply doesn't go far enough for the Palestinian cause, in my mind.
