I knew that he was very active on all of those issues, plus a few more, but I had thought I read somewhere (probably here) that he preferred activism to actually holding public office and as such was unlikely to run.

CLEVELAND -- Try this rumor on for size - Actor Martin Sheen might run for governor in Ohio.

Sheen plays President Jeb Bartlett on TV's “West Wing.” But the Dayton native has always been active and outspoken in real politics too.

A source that's close to Sheen bets this is all the result of a misunderstanding and thinks a run for governor is unlikely.

The governor's race is in 2006

I don't believe Sheen would beat the republicans in the general election. If we put up Sheen, and it looked like he was going to beat Feinstein (which I doubt) in the primary - the repubs would counter with someone like Dennis Miller. Sure, we think he's a nut. But we all underestimated the Schwarzenegger thing too.

This is insane at this time, imo. Discipline for a while, please? Let's working on regaining a majority before potentially losing another Senate seat - especially in my state.

When you combined the Centrist Dems with the Moderate Republicans, you've got 60% of the state....at least.

If Feinstein doesn't win the primary....the Republican running against Sheen would win as long as he wasn't a total shithead. Heck...Reardon might run on the Republican side. Than Sheen would be toast....once the media would get done with him.

Remember that this is the state that elected Arnie. Barbara Boxer won because she was running against a real conservative asshole who had no money.

Feinstein's even has more support in Northern California (normally the liberal side of the state) sewn up than one might think. Remember that she was the Mayor of San Francisco. I think she could even win the Governorship in the next race...if she wanted to.

I used to live in SF and remember the level of support Feinstein has there. Plus now I live in SoCal, where there are lots of repubs and lots of "Arnold Democrats" who would certainly not vote for Sheen but will vote for Feinstein.

I think it's the same argument going on around other topics - a variation on the purist vs. pragmatist stuff that we are all struggling with right now. Ultimately I think all this struggle will probably be good for our party, but I am worried that for the short term (next two election cycles) we will continue to fight about this stuff and doom our party to further losses.

right mostly stood for fiscal responsibility back in the days, now the democratic party is the party of fiscal resposibility, democrats were the ones who passed pay-as-you-go bill during clinton that actually restricted growth of government for the first time in us history. republicans took many positions (christian right family values shit, giving taxpayers money to corporations, unrestricted capitalism that leads to anarchy and monopolies, giving neocons blank check to attack anybody) that makes it impossible for anybody with a brain to support them.

p.s. as it says in my profile i don't believe in being moderate for the sake of being moderate, its better to take principled liberal or conservative positions on issues, and come out as a centrist when its all taken together.
