Lincoln - Illegal detentions.

Teddy Roosevelt - Set the precedent that we can boss around poorer countries.

Wilson - Red scare, suspension of the first ammendment. KKK leader

FDR - Internment camps.

Truman - Atomic bomb (debateable), Korea, Cold war escalation

Johnson - Vietnam

George W Bush - 9/11, Iraq, cutting taxes while at war, Patriot Act, arrested for drunk and disorderly conduct, was never legitimately elected (come to think of it, there really isn't anything good about him. I guess I've been watching too much FOX news).

I used to like McCain, I even felt a little bad for him after the way Dubya treated him in the 2000 primary. He seemed to have a good sense of humor and wasn't all rabid and hateful. I thought it was really cool that he adopted a girl from Bangledesh. But since he whored for Dubya in this last election I lost a lot of respect for him. Today he called the Democrats who voted against Rice sore losers, so, I'm no longer enamored of him.

I thought Christie Todd Whitman showed promise, but she's done her share of whoring. I remember seeing her on The Daily Show like a year ago, insisting that the Bush Administration Environmental record wasn't so bad and she really did resign to be with her husband. But now she has a book coming about how the most Conservative wing of the Republican party is ruining it, and brings up the environment as an issue. So, it seems to me she did leave because she knew they were doing a crappy job and wanted to help Dubya get another term.

I guess Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins aren't bad.

I really respected the way Ron Paul spoke out against the Iraq War and he has proposed bill to cut taxes on Seniors receiving Social Security, to cut taxes on teachers, to preserve the child tax credit, and opposed the flag burning amendment. More below.

As for Dick Lugar - I cannot agree with you - he is brilliant and all he does with his intelligence is play games of strategy - power plays. He could have stopped the attack on Iraq, but he didn't.

He's not perfect, but probably the best governor Alabama has had in my lifetime. Amendment One was gutsy and honest and proposed for all the right reasons. I was proud my town passed it by a bigger margin (70%-30%) than the rest of the state collectively rejected it.

Just as the Bush administration has successfully used fear and misinformation to lead a trusting U.S. public into disasterous situations -- big corporate interests, conservative fat cats and the abominable Alabama Christian Coalition used fear and misinformation to block a step in the right direction for our state. And they didn't mind tearing down "one of their own" to do it.

Riley will surely lose a lot of Republican votes over this in next year's election. But he still has many supporters, including a significant number of Democrats. And since anyone can vote in Republican primaries in Alabama, I hold out hope we can block a Roy Moore gubernatorial bid right there before a general election.

Follow me for a second here: if x equals how much I liked a candidate and y equals how much I like that candidate after they've served as an official for a couple of years, Riley's y-x factor is huge. He's done nothing really egregious, and he really tried to fix the tax system here. Not saying I will vote for him in a general election... almost certainly won't... but he might cause me to fight for him in the primaries.

to our parking lot at Kerry HQ/Union HQ, we had a car trying to get out the same way. But anyway, yeah, I used to belong to the Republicans for Kerry yahoo group, and every time Tom Terrel or anyone came up with a memo or a flyer, I'd take it into HQ. The volunteer coordinator was quite appreciative. She said Republicans for Kerry were their favorite constituency.

The yahoo group has switched over to "Republicans for Integrity" now. I wonder if they've gotten their groove back yet. I think the wind was taken out of their sails just as much as everyone else on Nov. 3rd.

I have to put one in for former IL Governor George Ryan. He's a thoroughly rotten, corrupt rip-off artist--but that moratorium on the death penalty, that days of listening so intently to grueling testimony from prisoners' families, victims' families, and victims of police brutality, and that final mass commutation of sentences at the end of his term, was one of the most amazing things I've ever witnessed in state politics (any of the states I've lived in).

Lots of Dems could take a lesson in conscience and balls from that. And a lot of lefties could take a lesson about how a politician can be a complete scumbag on some levels and also accomplish great things that really benefit real people at the same time. I certainly did.

Hey, he voted against the IWR. He's got some heart and soul, but sadly this is war: he needs to be unseated, and Rhode Island has the liberal will to do so.

It comes down to privilege, and as a descendant of one of the old aristocratic families of Providence Plantations, he still wants the tax cuts and the disproportionate subsidizing of wealth. He won't cross the aisle, and even if he won't vote for Junior for President, that seat is important.

His questioning of Rice on the subject of Hugo Chavez and the hypocrisy of our "moral" stance on various world leaders was wonderful. Still he's with the monarchists on many important issues, and his seat adds to the balance.

that Goldwater, or even Nixon (who created a department to combat poverty, which was headed by Rumsfeld at the time); would be considered liberals when put next to Bush. Many friends run locally, i.e., coroner, state's attorney, judge, school board, county board...the day to day running of local government. I often vote repub in local elections. Never on a state-wide or national election. Plus, my in-laws are virtually all repubs, but very pragmatic. Many of them voted Kerry.
