By me several months ago. They will have their little "scam" election and than the "installed" leader will declare Iraq is now a democracy and ask the US to leave. The right wing media will declare a success and the US will retreat back to their Air Bases where they will maintain for future ops in the region. (Iran). Troops will initailly come home in big numbers, but they will be back in force at the "Air Bases" by August/September preparing to do battle duting the winter months in Iran/Syria/etc.

Halliburton is pulling out of Iran. Iran is way too bellicose, they'll hit Israel if we invade, and we can't have that. Much easier to just aima slew of tac nukes targeted on Teheran, Esfahan, Busheer, etc. tell the Iranians in no uncertain terms to sit tight, stay the fuck out of it and we won't bomb them, and then we invade Saudi Arabia.

Who will defend Saudi? Their military? Oh, yeah, that's right, their military is US, for the most part. We do all of their security work. We know that place like the back of our hand. The cities are easily isolated, the oil fields are distinct areas, it would be easy to just declare martial law, restrict travel between cities, co-opt cooperative forces, and bully those who do not cooperate.

Saudi would be way easier than Iran, especially if we plan it right. Oh, and pay off the Arab countries in the region that don't have oil, with oil.

The perception of the Saudis within the Arab world is not uniform. Some people like their charitable aspects, others think they are cheap bastards who don't give enough, who live too large, who are bossy about the Holy Places, who make claims (re: line of descendency from Muhammed) that they have not earned. And while Syrians, Egyptians, Iraqis and those along the North African littoral have a rich cultural tradition, inventing everything from Algebra to Astronomy to Geometry and Sherbet, the damn Saudis were just a bunch of camel herders out in the sand. They didn't have that erudite, learned, cultural tradition. What they did have was bully warlords, and they had the worst property, and they had...OIL. And oil trumped all of the culture, the history, the rich traditions of those more civilized nations.

There's resentment. If handled right, it could play well for BushCo. Of course, he is culturally tone-deaf, so he will have a hard time playing the nuance, and nuance would be required in this sort of effort!

I bet the Al Qaida guys want Iraq to stay a mess forever -- it's living proof that America is both "bad" and can be "beaten". Having this "recruitment poster" forever suits their purposes I think. And if we leave and civil war breaks out -- resulting in millions of Iraqi deaths -- well, God, how horrible. I don't think leaving is as easy as Novak is making it sound. I think it's just a smoke screen -- they're just saying they want to leave to blunt the effect of anti-war sentiment.

The "new" government in Iraq (Allawi) will conveniently request that the US leave. Of course, it'll be important to leave some forces there, and plenty of independent contractors to help out with the oil, but other than that...

The only part of my theory I can't figure out is how they could leave without training Iraqi forces. Will they leave it to Europe? Will they shuttle them out of Iraq for training? Is there a way they could get some sort of independent private contractors to handle much of that as well?

At TBRNews.org a supposed insider has updated "The Voice of the White House" dated January 28. The prediction is that b*sh will declare the elections a victory no matter what the outcome is. He will then withdraw the troops despite the warnings of senior military officials of a bloody civil war. The troops will be "refreshed" to prepare for future wars in Iran and Syria.

I don't how how credible this "insider" is but this scenario would not surprise me. Lots of other scary things about b*ush in this article (as if we needed any more).

30. I'd bet heavily against it. Novak is simply reflecting one section

of thought among conservatives -- those who are aware that Iraq is an unwinnable disaster, & want to cut our losses. This group is typified by James Baker, Scowcroft, & Brzezinski (conservative, though a Democrat). Unfortunately, that group has no power any more, and all the moves Bush has made since the US election show that he is not going to listen to these "elder statesmen" types (who, although they're conservative, still belong to the "reality-based" community).
