6. Those who "voluntarily" stepped forward CANNOT NOW CLAIM THEY WERE"DRAFTED"...they stepped forward voluntarily and took the Oath voluntarily!

7. Assume Mr. B was smarter than Mr. A and HE DID NOT STEP FORWARD ANDTHEREFORE DID NOT TAKE THE OATH OF ALLEGIANCE. (the recruiter will probably say something like this: "what's the matter with you, don't you know what' step forward' means?" Mr. B responds, "sure I do, but I AM NOTVOLUNTEERING TO SERVE IN THE MILITARY...If you want me you must 'take me' against my will by force!"

were offered prison as an alternative to the military.

I'm afraid that was the choice, go to prison, or "volunteer" and head for Canada as soon as you were released for the day.

Sure fire ways to "avoid" the draft - legally.

1. Enroll in a college level (or, even better, a graduate level) theology program leading to a degree and ordination - even if its just a minor in a pre-law or pre-med program, or even in an engineering or business program. Ashcroft pushed that envelope.

You don't have to get ordained. Just study Bible till you're 26 ;-)as part of a formal, pre-ordination, degree progam.

2. Get one of those complete "whole body scans", see a good diagnostic internist for a complete work up, and also apply for AF flight school with a complete flight school physical exam. One of these exams will find something that gets you a "1-Y". Saxbe Chamblis or Chamblis Saxbe or whatever his name is did that.

They never tested my "blood" before I went in. I was an asymptomatic Type II diabetic (fasting about 110-120), with elevated cholesterol and elevated triglycerides. On the "metabolic syndrome" nomograph -- "1Y" -- but I was too dumb to realize.

Both perfectly legal.

9. Friend of mine got out of Vietnam

by wearing a spacer in one of his shoes for months before his physical. When he went in for the physical he took the spacer out and couldn't keep from limping even if he tried. They didn't want him.
Me, I had the choice between jail and jungle. Glad I made it back.
