7. The picture on the cover of the NYT today made my heart hurt

This man crying as he voted. I do feel for these people. I bet they've been through so much. Some under Saddam, some under us. They need a break.

I pray for their sake that things do go alright, and they end up getting their country back as a result.

I felt the same for the Palestinians when Arafat died. Not that I was an Arafat fan, but I knew they loved him, and that his death would hit them hard. I pray things work out for them as well. I only wish the Israelis saw more of themselves and their history in what's going on with the Palestinians.

I also pray for Iran. I believe if we would just leave them alone, the younger generation will topple the old religious regime. We could fuck that up so easily. I pray we leave them the hell alone.

17. With the Bush Junta backing all this, I can't help but feel the same way

I fear that the whole thing is rigged. Why else would Bush say so glibly that the US will pull out if the elected government asks us to leave? Perhaps he knows it's rigged for Allawi and that Allawi won't be asking his benefactors to leave anytime soon.

However, it's inspiring to see these people come out and vote despite the threat of violence.

It's a shame that the Busheviks think nothing of exploiting this courage for their own purposes.

It is emotional day all around.

Watching these people go to the polls in Iraq, you know this is an extraordinary moment. However, it is bittersweet because we know the cost at which it has come. And we also know the chaos surrounding this attempt at democracy.

I know the Freepers always accuse us of wanting the "Bush Administration's plans to fail," but back here in the reality-based community, one could understand how the Bush administration should be tried for war crimes and impeached, AS WELL as feel for the Iraqis and hope that, in the wake of the election, they do have an INDEPENDENT (from the U.S., that is) government, that will do right by the Iraqi people, and take NO SHIT from U.S. multinationals.

I hope they go well, too, and I hope they vote in someone with some serious fire in his or her belly to make Iraq a proud nation. The Iraqis do deserve a break, that's for sure.
