USA Today asks "How'd BUSH Win So Many GORE Voters? (Excellent Article)
The paper interviewed voters in Missouri, Michigan, Florida, and New Jersey, specifically in counties that went for Gore in 2000 but went to Bush in 2004.

What they found is that the "moral values" combined with the national security gap were what led to Bush's win.

Example:

Voters were drawn to Bush by memories of the 9/11 attacks and a reluctance to change leaders in the midst of war. They won't have that option in 2008, when Bush can't run again. But the craving for continuity helped him this time among swing voters and in areas with new voters.

Luis Cintron, 68, a retired school director, moved to Osceola County in central Florida two years ago from Puerto Rico. "I've been in the Army," he says during a break from an outdoor dominoes game with friends. "When we change the leader when the fight is hard, it's not a good idea."

<snip>

Cathy Harlow, 37, of Ocean, N.J., in Monmouth County... says she agrees with Kerry on social issues such as abortion rights but voted for Bush because of Iraq. "I wasn't necessarily happy to have Bush go into this war, but I was nervous to change things in the middle of it," she says. "I'm still on the fence. I may very well go Democratic next time."

<snip>

AFL-CIO official Richard Frantz says post-election calls to 150 union households in Calhoun County found ambivalent support for Bush: "If they had a son or a brother who was actively involved in Iraq, their idea was, 'We had to fully support him.' And then they reluctantly voted for Bush, because they didn't want to change leadership in the midst of a conflict."

<snip>

In Monmouth County, N.J., the view of the Manhattan skyline is a reminder of the terrorism threat and the dozens of people the county lost in the 9/11 attacks. William Denver, 34, a lawyer and Kerry voter from Middletown, says people who voted for Bush after supporting Al Gore in 2000 told him "they just felt safer with Republicans" after the attacks.

Wendy Katz, 32, of Manalapan, lived in Manhattan at the time of the attacks and says 2004 was the first time she voted for a Republican for president. "Security was the major issue on my mind," she says. "George Bush gets the urgency of dealing with that."

Also, so-called "moral values" did matter in rural areas, along with the gun issue despite Kerry's attempts to neutralize it.

Democrat Ben Miller, chairman of the Calhoun County (Mich.) Commission, was surprised as he campaigned door-to-door to hear even those who had lost their jobs say they would vote for Bush. When he asked why, they would say, " 'Well, I'm against gay marriage and so is he.' 'I'm against abortion and so is he.' "

The perception that Democrats want to restrict guns resonated in Missouri and Michigan, despite Kerry's efforts to portray himself as an enthusiastic hunter. Owning guns is "an inalienable right," says Keith Schnarre, a farmer and Republican who beat a Democratic incumbent to become presiding Boone County commissioner last fall. "People feel it's a protection against the government in some future century."

1. And what's so stupid is
we wouldn't be in Iraq if Gore had been elected.

Additionally, IF 9/11 had happened I think we'd actually be more of a global community rather than the rouge superpower that BushCo have created.

7. I believe that if Gore had been elected, 9/11 would not have happened..

He would NOT have ignored all the warnings about Osama bin Laden and terrorism.
(More tinfoil hatism: 9/11 was part and parcel of the Bush administration)

9. Agreed.
That's why I said "IF" it had happened. Among their other crimes, BushCo completely ignored the Gore Commission's recommendations. The Gore Commission came into being as a result of suspicions that TWA 800 crash was the result of terrorism.

The commission's report was roundly blasted by the New Republic http://www.tnr.com/textonly/031097/txtellingwood031097.html. The TNR said,

"The Gore Commission, which delivered its final report on February 12, and the Aviation Security Advisory Committee (asac), which weighed in two months earlier, both proposed ambitious new procedures aimed at protecting America's air travelers from terrorist threat. Today, as any frequent flyer can tell you, airport security consists of ritualized questions about who packed your bags, a request for photo identification and an x-ray of carry-on items. The new guidelines, however, would require deployment of powerful but cumbersome new bomb detection devices; implementation of a program to match bags to passengers that is meant to ensure no luggage is loaded on a plane without the passenger to whom it belongs; and development of an automated system that will screen passengers to look for those who fit the profile of a likely terrorist."

TNR deemed the recommendations expensive and things like FBI background checks for airport employees "would probably catch some would-be terrorists, but no one thinks background checks would catch them all."

It boggles the mind doesn't it.

2. Sounds more like it was about fear and ignorance...
...as opposed to simply continuity.

3. Must be nice to have a simplistic attitude about politics.
Make your decision based on 1 issue. I think the Republicans have figured something out that's eluded Democrats, namely, a large percentage of this country's voters is unable to see the forest because they really, really like to stare at a particular tree. Republicans custom tailor their message to these voters. They know how to mass customize their message.

I guess the orange alerts did what they were supposed to. Fear is the most powerful thing in the world.

12. Why do you suppose that BinLaden video popped up just before the election?
Bushies had the video back in September.

proof that media brainwashing works
all of the responses above point to the careful use of buzzwords
or memes by the GOP via the "news" media.
Security, anti terrorist, for example, are words that somehow
got associated with smirky and his chimpmen even though if
you follow the facts instead of the "talking points" on tv
are shown to be completely at odds ...

5. The media propped Bush up as strong on terrorism when he actually ENABLED
terrorism.

I'll bet my house that thanks to the corporate media, not ONE of those people even KNEW that George Bush was handed the Hart-Rudman Report on Global Terror on Jan.30, 2001 and he refused to read it.

THAT is just ONE example of how the media keeps this incompetent liar propped up.

11. Ignorance is not stupidity
some of these people, a critical number in some cases, can be educated to come over to our side.
They are misinformed if anything.

14. Either deal with it or assume the fetal position
Guess what -- if the voters are really as stupid as you think they are, then they were probably stupid years ago when they were electing Democratic presidents. And they'll probably continue to be stupid many years into the future.

Like it or not, in a democracy, you win elections by convincing the the most voters -- not the most intelligent voters -- to support you. Which means that the Democrats sure as hell better figure out a way to appeal to at least some of these morons, because there are an awful lot of them out there.
