Does anyone know of any Democrats backing Gonzales? Let's see if we can figure out why 100 senators agreed today to make Gonzales AG.

I'm certain Chaffe and Jeffords are with us. So there would have to be at least seven Democratic defectors to the torture regime for a filibuster not to work.

3. Votes aren't there
Reid said they has 30-35 against. I'd think that red state senators wouldn't want to vote nay on this one. Salazar introduced Gonzalez to open the proceedings so that already made the nomination hard to block.

4. The vote will probably be on Thursday
At least that's what Bill Frist said today. He wasn't sure how many votes for/against but was certain Gonzales would be confirmed.

5. They don't have the votes.
At least not enough to prevent cloture on a filiibuster.
