To the Honorable Senator Bunning,
I beseech you to look beyond party loyalty. I beseech you to look as far as you can until the truth is revealed. That truth will show that Alberto Gonzales was complicit in the bypassing of international law and violating the Geneva Conventions by changing the definition of torture to a very narrow subset of what was defined in those Conventions and in international law.
According to Mr. Gonzales' new definition, the Honorable Senator McCain was not tortured by the Vietnamese during his time held as a POW.
According to Mr. Gonzales' new definition, the beating of Jesus by the Romans would not have been considered torture.
Also, Michael Chertoff, nominee for Secretary of Homeland Security was involved in the review of this 'torture memo' and Mr. Chertoff found no issues with the narrowed definition of torture. Also, Mr. Chertoff was involved in suppressing evidence of abuse and torture regarding the case of John Walker Lindh in Afghanistan. This is now a fact as has been reported by various news outlets. I urge you to read the following news article at the International Herald Tribune:
Nominee aided CIA on tactics
http://www.iht.com/articles/2005/01/30/news/Chertoff.htmlIs this the type of logic, the type of character that our country needs in its top law enforcement officer? Nay, good sir. Nay, indeed!
Please, Senator, for the good of our great nation and to help restore American's dignity in the face of the unjust invasion of Iraq, vote Nay for the confirmations of Alberto Gonzales and of Michael Chertoff.
Sincerely,
