On the one hand, I've seen the report that says Social Security cannot pass because the Dems are united, so there must be enough Dem votes to thwart THAT, right? Why isn't it also the case that every Dem voting against TORTURE would stop Torture Pimp?

Paring it down, the Sen from Colorado is going to vote FOR. Is HIS the deciding vote that would allow the confirmation?

7. Will they stand behind that?
If we could get at least six Repubs to come out and say that they will not support Bush's SS plans, it will be DOA? Who are the Repubs on the committee (Banking?) that will decide on the legislation. If any of them break ranks and it doesn't even make it out of commitee, the Dems won't even need to bother with a filibuster.

2. no ...
there are enough Democratic Senators to maintain a fillibuster on SS. They don't think that a fillibuster is appropriate with Gonzales. Neither do I.

4. Dems will filibuster privatization
But will not filibuster Alberto.

It takes 60 votes to invoke cloture and end debate, and there aren't that many Dems willing to do so for an AG nomination.

Salazar voting to confirm is not the one thing that will allow him to be confirmed.

6. There are only 44 DEMS / 60 requires Bi-Partisan effort

41 can delay indefinately and they discussed that but were told they would lose filibuster on Judicial Appointments if they did and those are for LIFE.

4 years vs 40 years AND there are 60 repubs - so they can now go in and change any rule they want.

8. two things, filibuster and R crossovers
Edited on Fri Feb-04-05 12:07 AM by BlueInRed
First off, Dems can filibuster the SS stuff. (And I love the fact that Reid says if the Rs go nuclear and try to eliminate the filibuster, the Dems will put so many procedural roadblocks up the Senate will stop operating).

Second, there are Rs who wouldn't cross over on a cabinet nomination who will oppose the SS thing out of principle. I expect Chafee, Snowe, and a few others will cross the line. Whether it's enough to beat them on an up/down vote, I don't know.

9. Republicans up for re-election won't dare vote with Bush
We have the winning position on this one, we just need to make good usage out of it. Basicallly, Democrats need to run ads in 2006 in every state where there's a vulnerable Repuke who voted for Bush's social security. The ads should show 80 year old people doing manual labor. This will be killer and we could come very close to taking the Senate.
