the Bush Gay Agenda bothers me.
Edited on Wed Feb-02-05 11:31 PM by pinto
I am a Dem mainly concerned with Social Security, the war in Iraq and building the Democratic base here at home.

Tonight's SOTU makes it clear to me, though. I am out of touch.

I was hoping for a compromise position, or to be honest, an avoidance of the issues we gays face in the Federal agenda.

But, noooooooooo...the challenge has been thrown.

(I've worked so hard to be an honest member of the whole community, and have done fairly well in my efforts, and to have who I am questioned by the President of the United States, finally, on international TV, is my last straw.)

I'm done. I will oppose each and every action of this administration. I didn't want to do this, but jeeez..I can't live with this.

That's my take tonight. pinto

(ed for clarity)

15. Very true
On this Christian board I sometimes go to (there are non-Bush people there which is good!) on MLK day I made a post in his memory and one poster got upset how a LGC site had a statment in his memory and all that. Of course I got pissed off at the person and told him/her how MLK jr was for CIVIL rights and it wasn't about religion and all that. I don't remembered if they replied. Heh heh. But BushCo are anti-American and it's so disgusting how they are taking away freedoms from people when he's supposed to be this freedom fighter and all that. It really pisses me off as a fellow Christian how he's hijacked my religion for his own agenda and to gain votes. If you haven't sometime try to find the movie "When God Entered the White House." It's a scary movie. It's about the Christian fundies who are out to get a canidate who supports ONLY THEIR agenda. They don't care about the laws of the land: just what THEY want and their Christian fundie ways. It shows how they failed with Nixon, Reagan, Carter and Bush sr but are winning with Bush jr. They want supreme judges in the House who support what they want. It's really disgusting and very anti-American. :\

As a straight woman, I realize that an attack on any group is potentially an attack on all of us. We must always keep in mind that if any of us loses our civil rights, we are all losing our civil rights!

"First they came for the Communists, but I was not a Communist so I did not speak out.
Then they came for the Socialists and the Trade Unionists, but I was neither, so I did not speak out.
Then they came for the Jews, but I was not a Jew so I did not speak out.
And when they came for me, there was no one left to speak out for me."

5. added comment:
A constitutional amendment meant to exclude a portion of the country
from constitutional commitments between the state and the people is....let's see, unconstitutional.

I read that somewhere.

Bush said tonight that he supports an amendment to the Constitution that defines marriage as only a man and a woman.

The proposal's been around for a long time. But for the President - and he is the President - to take a minute or so to publicly jerk off his base means we gays have a battle. I had hoped it would go differently.

There are bigger issues on the table, but this one I can't ignore.

6. I'm with you ...
... but I think the whole "gay marriage" issue is not just BushCo giving his disciples little happy hard-ons. I think he sees this as a way to divide the Democrats. We've already seen groups like the Democratic Leadership Council advocate moving more toward the center (and away from traditionally liberal/Democrat positions on gay rights and reproductive choice). We need to remember we are fighting on two fronts: opposing the Repugnantcans and holding the Democrats to their positions on social issues.

7. Bush is throwing out some red meat to his supporters...
Evangelicals have recently been making noises about not marching in lock step with Bush unless he focuses on social issues. I suspect the gay marraige part is just a bone he's tossing to the mob to keep them quiet. His realy focus will be on SS.

17. You make a good point amjucsc
It's just like with the anti-abortion people not long ago. He spoke at their rally and showed his "support" and they were happy and all that. Now it's quiet for as much as I know. He toys around with them. I think what he does is he brings in an issue that will please the base (the Christian fundies who don't think for themselves) and keeps them on the string so his polling ratings don't go down too far. I think if he does do anything about the gay marriage thing it will be in his final year and/or when he's really desperate to do something that people won't like and he'll twist things around like with Iraq.

22. Right,
he pandered to them to win and then spoke no more about it and a couple weeks ago they put it to him to own up to his promises. He doesn't really give a damn but it's what the party needs to feed the base.

9. i have a feeling it has nothing to do with gay or straight, but gaining
calculated votes of the evangelicals.
Making it look like a support of certain people, to gain support of a segemnet of the polulation the GOP identified to be unhappy.
but then again, it would be scarry if * really believes in just watch what one of our Du'er posted the other night.

18. I saw that video
and it is scary. :\ I agree though he does it to keep his base happy. Remember on the third debate when he and Kerry AGREED about civil unions? And then Mary Cheney went out to campaign for her father and Bush to the LGC to gain votes? They don't care about anything but their agenda.

10. Here in SD they're working on a no-gay marriage referendum for 2006;
It's clear that the gay bashing card is going to be played again and again and again. There's no avoiding this; we've got to fight back and win. So far, we really haven't fought back; we've just ducked and ran for cover.

16. let 'em have their fun

Then, let them know that such a law will always be in conflict with the 14th Amendment. Get them to publicly commit themselves that (a) it doesn't, or (b) to a wager on how many years it will be until the USSC overturns their law (among others). You probably can't get them to change positions, but you can make them ridiculous in the public eye.

13. While I agree and I don't want to discourage you
I think that was mostly a bit of red meat thrown out for his Conservative base. I doubt they will get anywhere with the damn DOMA or anything like it.

And I don't think they want to either. It would interfere with their "victimhood."

I remember 4 years ago when I was still half asleep, and someone told me that Bush had been known for bringing various factions together as governor and building consensus. I hoped then.

But that hope died a while back. He never means that shit. Thinking back to Kerry's "man in exile" vid, it took him about two weeks after he asked the prez for just such a unifying to say to himself, "Well, that ain't happening. Right then, Plan B: Fight the Power."

angered me more than any other part of it, and I'm heterosexual. The right-wing's archaeic views on social issues is what "pushed me to the left".

21. Bush's agenda is nothing more than pandering...if he wanted to be smart
lol, like he could be smart. But anyway the SIMPLE EASY 1 WEEK fix to this is to get ALL federal/state/etc.. government OUT of the marriage business. EVERYONE in America 18 or older and concenting (MM/MF/FF) can get CIVIL UNIONS which will have ALL of the rights marriage currently does. Then leave marriage as a ceremony that individual churchs/mosques/etc.. decide whom they wish to "marry". But in the eyes of the government you're not married, you have a civil union. Easy, simple, no one has the right to bitch about it since marriage itself is a union based in religion.
