New Frame: Bush's BROKER Security Plan
Edited on Thu Feb-03-05 09:04 AM by Walt Starr
If the Democrats want to REALLY take the bull by the horns and get out in front of this thing to keep Bush from being able to succeed in wiping out Social Security, they had better get on board, use the correct frames, and walk in lockstep with those frames.

One talking point that, if they ALL stuck to their guns and kept using time and again, would be extremely successful is to REFUSE to use the words "Social Security" when talking about Bush's plan.

The talking point of the day:

"What the president is proposing is a BROKER Security Plan."

1. His proposal reminds me of the wolfs' line in Red Riding Hood
"Allow me to carry your basket deary"
Come to think of it his whole presidency reminds me of that fable.

11. His plan betrays the government's obligation to protect "the people".
Democrats seek to ensure the government fulfills its obligation by protecting "the people" from both physical and economic harm inflicted by human predators.

A bubble that will, when it bursts, ruin millions of families for generations, sending them into unending poverty?

6. The only people who will own anything once this goes into effect
are the people who currently own most of everything and yet make up less than 1% of the population!

5. No doubt

It's a scam in the highest proportions. Basically it's just lining the pockets of the "select few" companies. What Bush fails to mention in this plan, is that only a few companies will be allowed to be used to invest this money. I think a lot of those who are not on to this game think they can invest it anyway they want--NOT.

I'm sure Bush feels he has to "pay back" these big donors for his *cough* win and also he needs to slip some money in there to pay down the debt. Hidden motives laced with lies, lies, lies.

ON EDIT: I don't think Bush really cares about the national debt and the burden it's placing on our children's back.

7. You're damn right it's a scam, when the government will keep 80%
of your "private account" to give away to BROKERS:

"If a worker sets aside $1,000 a year for 40 years, and earns 4 percent annually on investments, the account would grow to $99,800 in today's dollars, but the government would keep $78,700 -- or about 80 percent of the account. The remainder, $21,100, would be the worker's. "

9. Walt...you are wrong. Brokers won't see a dime. Mutual Fund companies
would and money managers.

FICA would take $$$ and forward it to institutions not a broker.

10. It's still another government-created welfare program for the wealthy.
Edited on Thu Feb-03-05 11:25 AM by Just Me
It's still another scam to funnel public wealth into select pockets.

The fact that these greedy, corrupt predators would use deceptive/manipulative propaganda to fool people into playing into these anti-American scams is a freakin' outrage.

12. The "Broker" term is important in this frame because it plays to white
Edited on Thu Feb-03-05 11:38 AM by Walt Starr
middle class males.

The "Brokers" would be the brokerage firms, not the actual in the pits brokers.

The reason the term is important for the frame is white middle class men in business are constantly bombarded by spam (email, snail mail, fax, and phone) form "brokers" out to sell crappy stocks at premium prices. It creates an image of one of these spam phonecalls telling you to "buy this midcap stock now because prices are going up". That imagery is important to the framing of this debate.

Furthermore, if the frame is subdivided within the mind, it brings up the imagery of "brokers" selling folks their 401K plans which sat there and wallowed in the mud with no growth for the past four years.

The broker image is key to the frame.

13. I see your point. Some companies would profit...not the little guy.
If you read the WP...$4.5 Trillion in cost over 23 years. Somebody is getting the money.

17. We only need to clarify that the scam benefits big brokerage firms
in the debate of the details. "Broker Security Plan" is short, sweet, to the point, and evokes the proper imagery.

14. While framing the neoCONs' scam, shouldn't we also frame our plan?
We are, after all, the warriors for "the people",...for protecting not only the physical but also the economic interests of "the people".

Whaddya' think? :bounce:

15. Yep, We can propose a "Future Security Plan"
Then it forces the debate to be a question of Secuirty for the future vs. security for the brokerage firms.

16. Correct, Technically They May Not Be "Brokers"
But who the fuck cares?

I also propose framing the scheme as a gigantic 80% tax on your savings.
