Is this Kerry refusing to stand when Bush came in? In SOTU - pic
Edited on Thu Feb-03-05 12:18 PM by cindyw

Former Democratic Presidential candidate, Sen. John Kerry (news - web sites), D-Mass. goes over notes on Capitol Hill Wednesday, Feb.2,2005 prior to President Bush (news - web sites)'s State of the Union address to a joint session of Congres. From left of Kerry are, Sen.Ben Nelson, D-Neb., Sen. Mary Landrieu (news, bio, voting record), D-La.,and Sen.Barack Obama, D-Ill. (AP Photo/Gerald Herbert)

The notes here indicate it is before the speech. Why would everyone else be standing if not while Bush was coming in? I think this may be Kerry refusing to stand when Bush came in. Good for you Kerry.

6. Obama is part of the future.
When the radical right crumbles, and the cowards among the Dems have been replaced, people like Obama will be moving this country along.

In my opinion, it's way past time to clean house on both sides of the aisle.

I watched it and then saw it again on late night TV. You can say what you want about Kerry, But he is NEVER disrespectful.

11. Yeah, good for Kerry, that polite boy!
I wonder if he would have stood up and applauded if the ghost of Adolf Hitler walked into the room... Say what you will, but he is NEVER disrespectful.

18. Kerry was actually brought up
by his parents and not spoiled. His mother taught him better then that. If that was Bush he'd probably be sitting there with his arms folding over his chest muttering and whining to himself. Kerry is a real class act.

29. I did learn
from my dog obedience class that a strong willed, defiant dog will hesitate before obeying a command.

Maybe Kerry was showing a teeny-bit of defiance before the respect? That would be ok with me - sending a tiny message that he's in no hurry to stand for Shrub.

Tee-hee. :-)

I doubt that he refused to stand, and I hope he wouldn't do such a thing.

9. I was wondering where he was sitting
I know that they showed him a few times but I couldn't figure out where he was sitting from the quick screen shots.

I will have to watch the video again now to see if I can pick up when he stands and when he doesn't.

Thanks for the pic btw.

16. I noticed there were
quite a few times when many of the Dems did not stand and applaud. Kerry is a very respectful man but he is also not afraid to show his dissention. Not standing in a case like this is not so much disrespectful but exercising one's freedom of expression - to show dissent.

21. SOTU etiquette
Perhaps is not acceptable not to stand when the President enters the room but Democrats DID BOO during the speech. Maybe there is an old school etiquette playbook we are not aware of.

Quite frankly, I would have liked to have seen all Democrats stand and turn their backs on Bush as he entered the room.

Who defines "proper dissent" and etiquette? These are social constructs open to evolve and be redefined.

I think the Repukes little demonstration during the SOTUS of holding up their died fingers was in poor form. Having a demonstration to promote a bogus war and a sham election during our SOTU was tasteless and disrespectful.

Edited on Thu Feb-03-05 01:58 PM by ultraist
Is it poor manners to show dissent? I think NOT.

There is a certain procedural form that is followed during these formal events but not showing support for a fanatic cult leader is NOT disrespectful. In fact, it's noble.

23. He already did...
He already did enough standing in something called the debates back in 2004. He already knows what POV is going to be presented and probably decided to make good use of the time to get some work done.

24. Re Kerry standing/not standing
First off, if Kerry was clapping at points during the speech (as I heard he was, so I'm not sure), I don't know why he wouldn't stand and clap, as ridiculous as standing and clapping for Bush is. And if he didn't stand, that's fine with me; if I were in a room Bush was walking into I know the least "rude" thing I would do would be to stay seated.
