1. Competent Republican?
Isn't this a contradiction in terms, kind of like military intelligence?

6. Hopefully if the idiot's a real screwup he won't do any real harm.
A really competent Republican--that's scary.

Alright, let me add that I might vote for a fiscally conservative, socially liberal or even moderate Republican if he or she seemed a stand up guy/gal if only because I believe in preserving endangered species and true fiscal conservative Republicans who want nothing to do with the religious nut cases are as rare as the spotted owl.

7. Incompetent = ineffective = not able to cause damage (Hippocrates redux)
An incompetent polician will be ineffective and less capable of causing damage OR of doing any good.

"As to diseases,
make a habit of two things—
to help, or at least do no harm."
--- Hippocrates, The Epidemics

8. That's when I vote Green
Actually, I would depend on the Republican. I'm fair enough to take them one at a time. Typically, most of them are nowadays right wing morons who make excuses for war criminals.

So, if it's between a crooked Democrat and a typical Republican, I'll vote Green.

10. No excuse for being Republican in todays political climate.
To be a competent Republican means you are competent at pandering to a base made of racists, homophobes, xenophobes, elitists, looney Fundamentalists. A person could be damn good at keeping these various groups happy and that would not make them a good politician in my book.

11. I'm not voting in this poll, but...
...we used to have a Republican governor here named Jay Hammond, who a lot of us liked very much (his Permanent Fund idea could probably have a lot to do with that). He just never seemed like a Republican to me at all, a wonderfully folksy guy, man of the people, very approachable, and now that he's older, kind of reminiscent of Santa Claus. I think he's one of the rare ones, though.
