Seriously, why can't Bill Clinton simply call a press conference and make the following statement:
"When I warned America that there was a social security crisis, I wasn't being completely truthful. The fact of the matter is that I was simply looking for a way to marshall public support against the large tax cuts that the Republicans in Congress were attempting to push through. I believed that those tax cuts were unaffordable, and would replace the surpluses I worked so hard to build with mounting deficts. And as we've now learned, I was right. But I knew that in politics, being right isn't always enough. I knew that if given the choice between a tax cut and no tax cut, the American public would choose the tax cut. So I changed the terms of the debate. I framed the issue as a choice between a tax cut, on the one hand, and saving social security on the other. It may not have been the most honest thing to do, but the fact of the matter is that the Republicans were lying through their teeth claiming that we could have a large tax cut and still balance the budget. I don't regret what I did, but I do regret that my words are now being twisted by an administration that seems hell bent on creating a social security crisis where none exists."
