Smokescreen?
So what if the emphasis on social security is just a way to divert attention while something more insidious takes place? SS is an extremely important issue, don't get me wrong, but it doesn't look like the votes are there. Do they really think they can get them, or are they diverting attention from something else?

Thoughts?

1. Well
Need a new war on terror to get that through.
Hence a need to give the fear factor a break.

2. Of course!
We're not supposed to think about what's going on in Iraq.

3. The whole fixing Social Security is indeed a smokescreen!
Thanks for posting this imaginary girl! I'm glad someone else sees it! I think this is to draw public attention away from not only the past crimes of BushCo, but also their future ones. Everyone does indeed need to be wary of BushCo's plans for social security, not because it will pass, but because it IS being used as a diversionary tactic.

7. it's like someone constantly throwing 5 grenades at a time
which do you catch? And you could think one was a rock, but if you ignore it you might just find out it was a grenade after all. Yikes.

4. Iran, perhaps?
Maybe S.S. is just a smokescreen to divert attention from the upcoming war with Iran. Do you know that Halliburton and GE have stopped doing business in Iran? I bet the big boys know something is going down.

5. Surprised Halliburton's out then ...
... war's big money ... but I guess it's better after we destroy the infrastructure so we can rebuild it ...

6. I've been suspecting this, too.
It's got too many people up in arms. Hell, even the neo-cons I work with are pissed over the SS thing. It's all EVERYONE is griping about.

And THAT made me wonder what it was we REALLY should be looking at.

Honestly, these guys are the David Copperfields of politics, distracting the audience by waving the shiny object around in their right hand while the real sleight-of-hand is going on in the left...

13. Seems like they're starting to beat the war drums for that, though, so
why bother to direct attention away from it? I mean, it could be, but it doesn't really feel right.

12. Believe me, I've been wracking my brain over this.

I keep thinking that it can't be Iran or election fraud because those are already in America's collective conscious and it must be something under the radar. THEN I think maybe it IS either Iran or election fraud because, lord knows, the SCLM has done its best to make sure neither of those issues stay in the forefront. THEN I think that maybe I'm giving them too much credit and he really is stupid enough to trumpet the destruction of SS as the cure for America's cancer.

It's pretty much driving me crazy and frankly I'm at the point where I'm wishing the other shoe would hurry up and drop already because I'm tired of trying to decide what battle I should prepare for and what armor I should don.

In the meantime, though, I'm still dutifully working on those neo-cons who are finally snapping out of their trance, and sending out as many Social-Security-Disaster-Debunking emails as my little computer can handle.

You know, just in case * really IS that stupid.

11. i've been thinking SS is smoke & mirrors too
words out that halliburton is pulling out of iran when the contracts are over--so...are we stalling with the social security crap until the coast is clear (exit halliburton stage right) and then we go in there (when everyone is busy being refocused...look over here, no...over here...pay no attention to the man behind the curtin...)

hard to tell exactly what they have up their dirty sleeves

15. class actions, MSA's
Legislation on both of those have been introduced, and I saw a post earlier today on political asylum. We need to multi-task.

16. could be, but...
he's obviously making a huge effort to push it regardless, it's going to appear as if he wants it, so if he messes it up , he messed it up, if he doesn't get it he failed in trying. Its already been framed in terms of his political capital and whether he has it or not. theres political ramifications either way. i'm not denying it could be a distraction though, but probably more of an attempt at legacy building with some kick backs to special interests like everythign else

17. Creating a crisis out of thin air to further thee "have more's" interests
Obscene wealth is not only Bush's class and "base", it is his ONLY constituients.(Some of the most revealing footage in "Farenheit 911") He would rather dismantle Social Security than sacrifice tax cuts to the top or suggest that the top pay at least their fair share. He would rather send the children of the poor out to sacrifice their lives and kill just so his oil buddies can reap the rewards.

And that is pretty much it.

18. This is the result of a very long-term scheme to smash-and-grab SS
and transfer it to Wall Street.

And this might well be what they've been planning all along.
