CNN: "More than 150 programs" cut in Bush's budget (coming Monday)

Administration officials said Bush will propose combining 18 community development programs and cut their total spending by more than $1 billion. The largest is the $4.7 billion community development block grant, which assists more than 1,000 communities per year. Also affected are efforts for rural housing and economic improvements for Indian tribes.

In last year's budget, Bush proposed eliminating 65 programs -- mostly for education, housing, environment, and commerce-- for $4.9 billion in savings, and cutting 63 others.

Underscoring the difficulty of pushing such plans through Congress, only four of the 65 programs that Bush proposed to erase were actually eliminated while 20 others were cut, according to the House Appropriations Committee.

Bush sends his 2006 budget to Congress on Monday; the spending plan is expected to total about $2.5 trillion.

8. Community Development Block Grants

Those are some of the most popular (and needed) Economic development/public works/housing/public recreation programs around....cities compete for those grants every year and they do a lot of good for a lot of people....originally replaced "Model Cities" and "Urban Renewal" programs of the 60's and early 70's....

There will be a lot of howling if those grants go by the wayside....

So much for Bush's claim for an ownership society. By killing these community block grant programs, he is going to make it really hard for low-middle income people starting out to buy their first home. Hell, that's how I bought my first home twelve years ago. It is also how the young couple bought my house a year and a half ago when I upgraded and wanted to sell. This is a great program, and really helps out inner city neighborhoods become vibrant communities.

I'm not suprised by this, but am deeply saddened. This is going to bust the housing bubble also. What a fucking maroon Bush is.

homes and help families in-need make necessary improvements. The CDBG program is a good one. :(

11. He's cutting the funding so the faith-based money can be awarded instead.

He wants the inner city communities to beg from churches who will get the money from................our tax dollars.

13. and the faith based community doesn't know jack about

environmental problems that effect kids learning development and physical development. Mold, dust, lead and many other environmental contaminants will still be there when the funding has gone way of faith based initiatives.

Hopefully having faith raises IQ points because I know that common environmental risks that these grants help to mitigate do lower IQ points.
