45. That's what I'm watching -- I recorded it with my TiVo last night.

Intense and depressing. I need to listen to good music of the time and look at our family photos tomorrow as an antidote to thinking the Nixon years were total gloom and doom. We were newlyweds and new parents back then so there are a lot of good memories, though politically the best memory is of the huge headline NIXON RESIGNS.

Oliver Stone really delivers with "Nixon" like he did with "JFK," and Anthony Hopkins is always good. I'm at the part in the movie where he's having the creepy talk with Dick Helms (played by Sam Waterston.)

And in the report that "reputable businessman George Bush of Houston" had turned in information on 11/22/63 that someone in Houston had threatened the life of President Kennedy, the memo informs that Bush advised he would "return" to Dallas and remain at the Adolphus Hotel. The telephone call from Bush to the FBI that day was placed in Athens, Texas -- about 45 minutes from Dallas. And the phone call was placed about an hour and a half after the assassination. Looks like Bush left Dallas after the hit, drove to Athens (home of Clint Murchison), called the FBI with bogus information, and advised that he was returning to Dallas.

So even if Poppy doesn't exactly remember ... the FBI Memoranda tells the story. Also, I recall that Barbara has stated that she was in Dallas with George W. that day.

Then there's the little matter of J. Edgar Hoover's memorandum stating that the FBI had briefed "George Bush of the CIA" on the status of the assassination investigation. George said it must be "another" George Bush. Turns out there was another George Bush working at the CIA at the time, but he was a low-level staffer who publicly stated that this was not HIM and that he was never in a position to be briefed about anything! The fact that George H.W. Bush was subsequently named Director of the CIA by Warren Commissioner Gerald Ford tells me something.

I have heard that Poppy thought Nixon's mental state was a liability he couldn't afford, given the fact that Dick knew Bush family secrets going back to the Bay of Pigs invasion, and it's operational sequel in Dallas Texas (where both Poppy and Dick were on 11-22-63, oddly enough)

So with Nixon disgraced, who would listen to him? Although he had started to redeem his public image shortly before his death. He should have spoken out in the early 90's when he knew he had nothing left to lose.
