SS and young people
Have they considered the reality that SS has prevented many from having to take in their parents in old age?
So while considering SS "reform" they need to ask if it cuts benefits for their parents age in the 45-55 group.

1. When you were young, did you worry about Social Security?
I know I didn't.

It was something for my grandmother to worry about.

It's hard for me to believe that any of the youngest generation gives any serious thought to their retirement or Social Security.

3. True but...
now SS is becoming part of the public discourse.
This should be mentioned to the young people who favor changes.

5. Agreed, but hell, young people don't even know about the drug laws
And the drug laws just eat them up.

You get popped with a joint and you lose the ability to get a college loan. (But if you do steroids and are on a winning football team, you get treatment.)

2. When I talk to a younger person, I call it mother in law insurance
because without Social Security, she will have to move in with them.

4. Couple of things, (1) they may end up having to help Mom/Dad if
the Boomers SS ends up getting gutted. So if you are young and want your parents to move in with you when they get old and ready to retire, by all means support Bush's plan. Instead of inheriting a few things from your parents, you may be getting live in parents and an extra financial burden.
and
(2)it was a lie to Boomers when we were young that increased the FICA taxes and look how that panned out. Since they lied to us about what would happen, young people should stop and ask if they are lying to them too. After all, it was Greenspan and many in the Bush admin who came up with the "trust fund" idea, which they now seem to claim is worthless.

Just something to chew on.
