Mormon Democrats link up in Congress
Well, I'll be a monkey's uncle ....

Caucus aims to show that LDS, Demos a good mix
By Jerry Spangler
Deseret Morning News

WASHINGTON — They are not large in number, but the Mormon Democratic Congressional Caucus is determined to dispel the perception that the words "Mormon" and "Democrat" cannot be used to describe the same person.

Under the direction of Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from Nevada, three of four members of the caucus met earlier this week to discuss issues relevant to the LDS community and to discuss how to raise the profile of Mormon Democrats.

Joining in the meeting were Rep. Jim Matheson, D-Utah, and Rep. Tom Udall, D-N.M. Rep. Eni Faleomavaega, a nonvoting member of Congress from American Samoa, was not able to attend but plans to participate in the future.

"Legislation is the art of compromise, and a strong two-party system is fundamental to our democracy," said Reid, who as leader of all Senate Democrats is the highest-ranking LDS member of Congress. "I believe strongly that Democrats have many of the same issues at heart as do membership of the church."

1. Thank heaven
Jim Matheson is a BlueDog Democrat, which he has to be to maintain his seat, but he's still a Democrat. I love Harry Reid. I think it's a mistake to ignore Utah.

2. this goes back to the Sarandon thing ...the Dems not getting "rural"
and Utah was a prime example of this ...the Repugs "get" this state because they "get" the rural issues there. Time for dems to "get" it too.

I couldn't believe the public outrage against Michael Moore going to one of their universities before the election.

3. We're almost in a theocracy now; we must win with religion or lose forever
Edited on Sun Feb-06-05 01:27 PM by PurityOfEssence
I hate it, I disagree with it, and I resent it, but that's the truth. This country has gone so religious that secularists and non-believers are on the verge of being run out of town.

The good side of this is that there are many believers who have veritable hearts of gold and are brimming with outrage at the selfish actions of the thugs of the right. I wish all of you well, and PLEASE organize and fight with the terms of belief. It's untoward, and has dangerous ramifications for the future for so much of the discussion to necessitate affiliation and belief, but the option of letting the religious right win is much worse.

Good luck.

Sigh.
