Their answer to Dems who say "roll back the tax cuts for the rich" >
Edited on Mon Feb-07-05 08:51 AM by Stephanie

They got Timmy Russert to trot out this new line yesterday, which they will use on any Dem who opposes the budget cuts on services to the poor. This is how Timmy countered Sen. Kennedy yesterday, in discussing alternative ways to solve the SS shortfall. They are going to trap Dems into saying the words "raise taxes" so they can quote them on it later. Mark my words.

MR. RUSSERT: So you would roll back the president's tax cuts.

SEN. KENNEDY: That's a possible--for one-third, he wants to make it permanent. You can roll back just one-third of it and solve the Social Security problem. I think that ought to be on the table. It's interesting, when the president spoke the other night, Tim, he never mentioned what his answer was. He never told us what his solution was for the out years.

MR. RUSSERT: he...

SEN. KENNEDY: He talked about private savings accounts.

MR. RUSSERT: Well, he said everything should be on the table.

SEN. KENNEDY: OK, well, I'm giving you a suggested way of doing it.

MR. RUSSERT: Would you...

SEN. KENNEDY: Now, can we go to the Medicare?

MR. RUSSERT: Let me finish.

SEN. KENNEDY: OK.

MR. RUSSERT: Would you agree with him that age eligibility should be on the table?

SEN. KENNEDY: Not at this time because I don't think we have a crisis.

MR. RUSSERT: Cost of living increases?

SEN. KENNEDY: I'm giving you my--one of the ways that we ought to do it. That's what your question...

MR. RUSSERT: Raise taxes?

SEN. KENNEDY: Roll back--or he wants to make permanent, and I say you can take a third of that part, at least solve--that is one of the alternatives.

MR. RUSSERT: But that's raising taxes.

SEN. KENNEDY: OK. That's rolling back.

MR. RUSSERT: That's honest.

SEN. KENNEDY: Whatever way.

1. Government In Bankruptcy = Rolling Back Taxes
Frame the debate.

Bush has bankrupted this country.

2. How about 'uncut'

taxes that should never have been cut in the first place.

3. I think we can frame this issue
I mean it's clear who got the benefits of the last go around on taxes and it's clear who didn't get any benefits. So this should be on the table (although the President was pretty clear that it wouldn't be on the table in his mind).

4. not a problem - tax cut folks are solid GOP -the rest see nothing good has
happened

If I had not screwed you this hard you would have been screwed even harder has been the GOP sell for 4 years -

I do not see a downside to a bit of "class warfare" going the other way - this time on the rich.

5. "Uncut". "Rationalize". "Correct". "Repair". "Make Fair" etc etc etc
There are plenty of euphemisms we could grab onto as an alternative to the verb "Raise"......

6. Let us take him at his word when he proposed temporary cuts.
Now we need to address where the cuts have put us before we think about the next step.
I makes sense that the cuts be rolled back rather than this blatant move to DOWNSIZE AMERICA.

9. The biggest problem here is going to be getting the message out.
All of those TV talking heads make a lot of money. Are you going to be able to say that phrase in front of 15 mill Katie Couric or however many million she gets without her saying 'raise taxes?' Our media is a bunch of celebrities.

10. Make it about patriotism
We should be talking about shared sacrifice in time of war. The poor and the middle class are ALREADY sacrificing. The richest people in America should too. Their sons and daughters are not fighting this war. They should be ready and willing to support it financially by giving back the tax cut.

War demands shared sacrifice.
