SOUTH BEND -- At least part of the Social Security debate focused on the 2nd Congressional District again Friday, as the Republican National Committee sent letters to local television stations asking them not to air what it calls a "false TV ad" promoted by MoveOn.org.

Washington, D.C.-based MoveOn.org immediately issued a statement defending the accuracy of its ad, which began airing on local stations Tuesday and which is critical of the president's plan to revamp Social Security.

The RNC letter drew a mixture of responses. One local station executive said he viewed the tone of the letter as "threatening." Another said he planned to investigate a statement in the ad and might decide to pull the spot if he found it to be misleading.

The national ad, titled "Working Retirement," debuted on local stations Tuesday.

4. in all fairness, I hope MoveOn didn't exaggerate the impact...
...i.e. imply that benefit cuts that would affect someone in 2075 are directly relevant for retirees-to-be from my generation, the 50-or-thereabouts baby-boomers. We don't need to resort to deceptive tactics, and doing so discredits by association our legitimate arguments against the Bush SS "plan."

8. Their cuts WILL affect you.
Less money in, less money out. It will affect those already on the program as well.

The cost of Medicare is going up. That is taken out of the Social Security check. So in effect, the Social Security has already gone down.

Many are losing their retirement drug benefit from their former employees, so that is going to hurt bigtime. This is part of the new Medicare bill.

12. oh I know that....
I'm in the group that is maximally screwed under the best possible outcomes to Bush's proposal-- all the benefit cuts with no time for investments to offset them, even under the most hopeful of circumstances. We're a HUGE demographic. That's why MoveOn shouldn't resort to exaggerating the impact of Bush's assault on SS. The unvarnished truth is devasting enough.

6. Ugly and scary as all get out
This is -- aaarghh, sends cold chills down my spine. It really does.

Betweent heir propaganda (incl. paid shills) and attempted suppression of others' speech,

MoveOn ought to sue the hell out of the RNC if this results in the ad being pulled anywhere for violating their First Amendment Rights.

10. Don't worry..
... if the pukes ever get a station license pulled over this ad, we'll go back and get the license of every station that ran the SBVT ads.

In case that wasn't clear, let me say it another way. The RNC isn't about to set a precedent that would not only bite them in the ass, but bite off a whole cheek at at time.

It's a totally empty threat.

14. I seriously doubt they could have a license pulled for running an ad.
Even with Pub control everywhere! If they forced something like that, they'd have to also pull the license of Clear Chanel for airing Limpballs, Goortz, Hannity, etc. along with FOX, and any other network that airs biased viewpoints.

Sounds like a BIG GUN and NO bullets!

19. Where were the Reps during Swift-Boat season?
Edited on Mon Feb-07-05 11:36 PM by TwoSparkles
Gee, the Repukes are coming out of the walls, demanding that televisions stations "not air false TV ads."

Where were these jerks when the Swift-Boat liars were pedaling their knapsack full of crapola?

When the Dems create ads based on facts and information that can be backed up--the Reps threaten the stations. However, when a group of fraudsters, with no evidence to back up their lies--attempts to position a courageous war hero as a "traitor"--these same Reps are just fine with that!

These bastards are not interested in "false TV ads".

They're interested in squelching dissent.

This is America. Give it up.
