Tell me I didn't hear it right...Did the Dipshit really say....
He was talking about budget cutting. Saying EVERYONE needed to take a close look at each program. Is it bringing the right REEEZults? Is it accomplishing the GGOOAL...blah blah. Then I could have sworn he said "The poor need to do this too, look to see if the program is working."

How kind of him. Let's see, I am poor, I have 3 kids and 2 minimum wage jobs and I can't afford healthcare and I barely can pay rent and daycare. Let me analyze the food stamp program....

Bush Proposes Big Cuts to Rein in Deficit

Mon Feb 7, 3:51 PM ET
By Caren Bohan and Adam Entous

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush (news - web sites) on Monday proposed a $2.57 trillion budget that slashes domestic programs from farm aid to housing grants for the poor, as he sought to curb budget deficits that have soared on his watch.

Democrats derided Bush's plan as a "hoax" because it excludes future costs for the Iraq (news - web sites) conflict and massive borrowing required for his proposal to add private investment accounts to Social Security (news - web sites).

<snip>

Some analysts said Bush would have trouble getting even a Republican-controlled Congress to sign off on a number of the cuts. Budget hawks question the president's resolve to push them through, given he has yet to veto a spending bill.

<snip>

Nine of the 15 Cabinet agencies would see cuts, including an 11.5 percent reduction for the Department of Housing and Urban Development (news - web sites), and spending for more than 150 programs would be eliminated or sharply curtailed.

Bush would squeeze $45 billion in savings from the Medicaid health program for the poor while abolishing subsidies for the Amtrak rail system, cutting community development programs by 4.5 percent and reducing farm programs by 2.9 percent.

2. Yeah, he did.
Stammered out something off-the-cuff about the poor wanting answers about whether or not programs are working and the poor deserving answers about whether or not the programs are working and he got tired of asking why programs weren't working so he just slashed a whole bunch of programs and said they'd been duplicating the work of other programs.

Wait, I thought they weren't working...

Said all of this while he was eating pancakes or signing papers or something, he clearly couldn't care less.

(Ok I'm probably wrong about the pancakes but for some reason that's the visual I had in my head from my memory of the clip just now on MSNBC).

4. There was a good article in the NYT today. They pretty much
said there was not enough money in the discretionary spending to make a dent in the huge sink hole of deficit. Clinton was successful because he had a great economy but he generated lots of tax revenue from the people who prospered. But since B**slashed taxes... It is so sick -- keeping those tax cuts and cutting food stamps!!! It is so utterly blatant.

Demos need a REALLY good public relations firm to get the word out on this travesty.

24. Blazinmiller, Which Democratic policies do you actually support?
Edited on Mon Feb-07-05 11:18 PM by Tigress DEM
You don't like people having their Kerry bumper stickers on their cars?

You feel sorry for the poor little rich people.

You think the .gov should be less involved in making people's lives better. Enjoy your feces contaminated water in the near future.

You suscribe to the sink or swim theory because you survived and got tough.

You think other people who can't do what you did are a drag on the system or something. I don't know exactly who you think needs weeding out because I doubt you've never worked with anyone in a disadvantaged situation before.

People can go from 2 incomes and a nice house to out on the street these days in a heartbeat. Don't think the poor aren't people you'd actually look up to for their courage and determination, if you'd not be so closed minded and allow programs that keep them alive to fight another day keep moving forward.

They have just been handed major ammunition. While Bush is "cutting" and borrowing Social Security (code for destroying) Wanting to give permanent tax cuts to the wealthy, he does so on the backs of the working class and the poor. He wants to cut funds from Social Programs.....

How about if we stopped the "Permanent Tax Breaks" and infuse the money BACK INTO THE country, we could save Social Security for the next 2 centuries! How about if we don't make the Tax Cuts Permanent for the Wealthy, we don't have to cut Social Programs, like food stamps....

Come On you genius's put something together!

That should be key for the '06 elections. All of the Repukes up for re-election who vote for this atroscity should be facing ads showing sick kids not being allowed to see a doctor because their Senator voted to cut Children's healthcare. They should be facing ads showing kids living on the streets because their Senator voted to cut housing. This is war and to win these battles we need to fight.

because I started screaming at the radio...I always think the idiot puppet can't surprise me and then he opens his mouth again. Oh, right, Georgy Porgie, the poor really don't mind that they are on the streets because, don't you know, those housing programs don't work...I can't stand it.

Meanwhile, one of the new Republican sound bites seems to be that the Democrats are the "Party of No." The Dems better come up with something pretty damn fast to counter this, because it is a very powerful theme - short, memorable, associative, broadly (and misleadingly) applicable. People will remember it long after they've forgotten WHY the Dems voted no on one of shrub's pretty little schemes to put more in the pockets of his Corporate Masters. The Dems won't be remembered for voting to keep children warm in the winter, they will be remembered as voting "no" on deficit reduction unless they come out strong with a better plan - like fair tax share for Corporations and the rich - sum it up in a better sound bite and blast the Republicans with it. Faint hope there, alas.

44. Ignore them? Ignore them? Since when does that work for us?
Remember the Swift Boaters? And I am hardly suggesting that we have nothing but sound bites to counter the Republican assault on every $ that supports a healthy community rather than a Corporate profit. I am suggesting that the Dems need to counter the brilliance of the Republican propaganda machine with a strong stance FOR working people, FOR fair share taxation, FOR healthy community, FOR environmental protection, etc. and find language to convey it that people can understand. The Right has done a brilliant job of stealing words like "values" and "responsibility" for their savage war against the approx 80% of us who don't make $200,000+ a year.

A label like "the Party of NO" is devastating - people will remember it long after they've forgotten the details of why the Dems voted agaist something.

46. Deja vu all over again.
I just finished reading David Stockman's book, The Triumph of Politics. He was the architect of Reagan's supply-side economics. He described his vision as a genuine attempt to shrink government. The tax reductions would be offset with cuts across the board--military, social security/medicare, and all other social programs.

Only problem was, the politicians loved the tax cut idea, but not cutting military or social security. They made excruciating cuts in all the social programs, but Stockman knew it would never be enough to pay for all the tax cuts they had made. He kept trying to explain to Reagan and his minions that the social programs were such a small chunk of the total budget that you could never cut enough from them to pay for all the tax cuts, but Reagan always digressed with some anecdotes from his time in California about wasteful government spending. He even tried to get Reagan to back off on some of the tax cuts, but he wouldn't budge on that or the military. Stockman finally resigned in disgrace and frustration, and our country got record deficits.
