Two the biggest problems we, as Democrats, face are:
1. Most Americans think the media is too liberal. This is because the right wing media tells them that they are liberal to give themselves more credibility when they defend the right wing and attack the left and center.
2. The media in the United States is extremely right wing. The media does everything it can to protect Republicans and destroy Democrats. This is not just a middle of the country problem. Look at what the media has done in California in the last few years. They are bringing down elected Democrats left and right and they supported a Republican movie star relentlessly. This is a national problem.
The solution to both problems is obvious. The Fairness Doctrine. Even though the Republicans control the government, thanks to their allies in the media, we can use the Fairness Doctrine as a weapon against them. If elected Democrats picked up this issue and promoted it every single time they were on TV, ran ads (why do Republicans always seem to be running ads, and Democrats less?), and just made it a big issue, it would be a win-win. Either we get it passed, and that helps to solve problem #2 above, or we show the American people that the Republicans are against fairness in the U.S. media and that helps with problem #1 above.
It's very simple:
If Republicans are against The Fairness Doctrine, that proves that the U.S. media is biased toward the right wing!
That is a very simple statement that every elected Democrat in the country should be shouting to anyone who will listen. Either show the people that the media is biased to the right, or pass The Fairness Doctrine. We win either way. It would be great if we could both pass it and show the American people the right wing bias of the U.S. media, but either one would be great.
Why don't elected Democrats do this? Why aren't we hearing about it every single time a Democrat opens their mouth? Fighting against Bush while being the minority party everywhere is only going to do so much right now. We need to look at the long term fight, and fixing the media problem is near the top of the list.
Doesn't it seem simple? Doesn't it seem like an issue where we can win? Will Democrats learn some strategy and go on the attack on this issue?
The only strategic reason not to do this would be if Democrats think that they can take over the media and push it to the left, or at least to the center, but who sees that happening anytime soon?
