3. One America
I know the soul of this party and so do you. It lies deep inside each of us and goes to the core of what we believe not just as Democrats -- but as Americans. Everyone - -and I mean everyone -- deserves a fair chance. And we have a moral responsibility to help those who are doing everything right, but are still struggling.

We have been given minds to think with. But we've also been given hearts to inspire us.
When we try to lead with just our minds, we are neglecting the better half of our nature

So don't tell me Democrats don't stand for anything. Because we do. What we believe is that you should never look down on anybody, we should lift people up. We don't believe in tearing people apart. We believe in bringing people together. What we believe—what I believe—is that the family you're born into and the color of your skin in our America should never control your destiny.

Let's turn the page. Let's move forward. Let's build that one America we all believe in.

~John Edwards

9. I don't disagree with...
... the sentiment, but really - look at American culture.

Our TV shows, movies, music, EVERYTHING is tinged with the "winner" vs "loser" attitude.

Anyone espousing the ideas you relate here is considered (derisively) an "old hippie", out of touch with reality.

I believe America will one day again reach for a higher level peace, love and understanding, but it will not come soon, nor will it come easy.

More than likely, we'll have to have a precipitating event, something wide spread and cataclysmic, to refocus people away from the divisions we have and back to the common goals. Sorta like 911, except this will probably come in the form of an economic disaster, sadly.

4. we are for fairness
in everything - - in jobs, in opportunity, in treatment of human beings, in education.

How could someone be against fairness as a principle?

6. Exactly, we are for fundamental fairness and a level playing field
Edited on Tue Feb-08-05 01:09 PM by BlueInRed
They were talking about the fairness doctrine on another thread, and I thought, you know, that's exactly what our party is all about. Fundamental fairness and leveling the playing field. And the other side is all about making the playing field as unlevel as possible so they can maintain their power and money base.

A lot of Clinton's arguments were couched in terms of fairness. Americans love fairness. Clinton said if you work hard and play fair, you should be able to get ahead in this country. EXACTLY.

Democrats -- for fairness and equality in America!

8. DNC doesn't "do message"
That's up to the elected folks. The DNC can *help* by allocating money to help the elected folks coordinate a message, but by itself the org ain't gonna be spouting opinions.

11. The DNC crafts the platform, the message comes from the platform
They do have a big hand in the message.

Dean has been talking about how the Democrats need to return to their core values. I expect a coalesced message will begin to resonate out from the DNC after Dean has been on board for a bit.

The DNC is there to work for and with the elected Democrats.
