Remember back in the day when...
The televangelists were fringe? Now it's commonplace for the President to consult with Billy Graham, Pat Robertson, and Jerry Falwell.

Yesterday, I turned on CNN's Crossfire (which I though was getting cancelled  ) only to have the galling experience of Paul Begala from "the left" facing...wait for it...none other than...JERRY FALWELL "from the right". WTF??? I saw this one other time with Falwell standing in as host "from the right" in the run up to the election.

This shit's gotta stop!

2. "Religious" leaders seeking worldly power is rarely
a good sign... or a good thing. Religion, like the "press", can furnish a useful counterweight to government or to corporate interests (and both of the former should avoid coming too close to either of the latter). But with the mainstream press failing in its duties, corporations holding sway, and many in community of (self-avowed) believers seeking relentlessly for material and political objectives, the overall picture is quite grim.

3. It's past time to call attention
and scream from the rooftops asking..."Why is the GOP putting the fringe extremists front and center as their representatives?"

Yes, we know the truth as to why. (Because that's who controls them.) Still, we should be forcing this question into the fray. Cause those who are Republicans and Independents to take notice instead of simply accepting it.

Imagine if "the left" had Howard Dean as Crossfire host. The RNC's Mothership would risk frying a chip or two as it dispatched its cells throughout the media crying foul.

5. The mainstream media, unfortunately,
offers the best hope for getting any message across quickly to large numbers of people. And if anything they are getting worse (although this hardly seems possible) -- and becoming more cowed by RW extremists.

I still maintain that we need to pressure the media strongly in ways that effect the bottom line directly -- and stick to it until it bears fruit. And I also think that when we do advertising campaigns we have to use the same "appeal-to-the-whole-person" approach that the RW extremists are using (by means of various professional marketing types). Appeals to rationality, to obvious realities and to common ground just don't seem to work that well any more.

But press the media in any way that we can, by all means.

6. I wholeheartedly agree!
Especially with your p2. We need to level the playing field with a marketing strategy that becomes our guidebook. Have some patience with it, but get it in play and tweek it when necessary vs. overhauling it everytime we're put on the defensive.

Off to email Media Matters and hope the Fallwell thing gets picked up!
