GOP is focused on future

It was a full day for the Hall County Republican Party. Members heard Saturday from state Sen. Casey Cagle on his bid to become lieutenant governor in 2006 and state Rep. James Mills' thoughts concerning the historic transition to GOP control of the legislature.
The group, meeting at the Gainesville Civic Center, also elected officers for each of the county's 39 precincts and delegates to the county convention set for March 5.

The day began with the party's monthly "Conservative Forum," featuring Mills as the main speaker. Mills, of Chestnut Mountain, said he believes that because of the state's Republican majority, "we cannot blow this opportunity to govern and govern well."

House leaders also want to thin out the amount of unneeded bills.
"Legislation should be a last resort, not a first reaction," said Mills, who heads the Banks and Banking Committee, serves as secretary on the Rules Committee and is the dean of the Hall County legislative delegation. He added that he believes in the notion that lawmakers should "get the business of the people done and let's get out of there." The legislature is planning a "family day" on March 12, when lawmakers "will take laws off the books." "I'm excited about that," Mills said. "I think that's the direction we need to be going."

Mills also spoke about a meeting he and 34 other state legislators from across the country had with President Bush in December. During the press-free meeting, Bush talked about tasks ahead in his second term, including a reworking of the financially ailing Social Security system. Mills said that one of the reasons he was selected to attend the meeting was that he had introduced a bill calling on the General Assembly to urge Congress "to do something about the looming forecast of Social Security."
