What the hell is going on with our Country!!!!!!!
Brit Hume spouting lies, Rice spouting off about Iran, Queer Eye from the right guy, Cutting veterans benefits, Sean Vannity somehow became popular, freepers spreading crap, Oreily talking about combat and punting footballs, blah blah blah blah........

2. Exactly..the more you know, the more you realize
that it isn't hyperbole. Most of what is going on I regard as willful ignorance.

14. Welcome?
Should I be welcoming anyone? I just got here myself! By the way, you're a brave warrior for using that Phillies logo. I thought I was the only person in Philly looking forward to the season. I oughta put an Iggles logo on mine!!! Fly, Eagles, fly. On the road to...

yeah, I know. But wait 'til next year!

19. That was not a command directed at you, oh fellow-sufferer
It was a greeting that needed a comma: "Welcome, ferodemide2"

Re: Iggles
Sad story - I was at the gym Friday night before the Superbowl, and there were these little kids in the snack area, all wearing Eagles gear and all very excited.

You know what went through my head? "Aw, poor kids, they'll find out on Sunday night what it means to be a Philadelphia fan. Oh well, they have to learn some time." How sick is that? How Philadelphian is that?

As for being a brave warrior - we went ahead and bought our partial-season tickets already. So we're paying for the opportunity to watch the Phils get beat up. But I do love that Chase Utley....

And a welcome to DU to you, too, harlinchi
:hi:

8. Welcome to the world of the woken my friend
A lot of Americans are like you were. They simply don't realize or refuse to accept the depth of corruption that has befallen us. Pat yourself on the back for finally accepting it. That makes you light years ahead of millions of people out there. We have a media that is controlled by right wing corporations. We have a voting system that is controlled by right wing corporations. We have a congress that is controlled by right wing corporations. We have a president that is controlled by right wing corporations. We have a judiciary that is controlled by right wing corporations. In other words, we're fucked.

But here is where the resistance is growing. One day, we're going to take this country back. I'm not sure when, but it's going to happen. So welcome to the underground. It's going to be a long fight ahead.

11. Not OUR country anymore, the Old American Republic is dead and gone
If you want to pick over the bones, I suggest you check the Ash-heap of history, alongside the Roman and Weimar Republics.

Now Imperial Amerika is a Totalitarian nation in which, like Imperial Rome, it is in the best interests of the Imperial Family to maintain the Lie of a Free Nation to further tighten the slavery around the necks of the Imperial Subjects while convincing them they are still Free.

But Free Nations have trustworthy voting systems and Free, Independant Presses.

Amerika has a Slavish self-censored Infoganda machine that has more in common with Communist Chinese media than Walter Cronkite. And it has uninspectable unauditable "voting" machines that Stalin would have LOVED.

That is just two areas, but the Totalitarian Transformation is much wider spread than that.

It isn't our Country any more than Nazi Germany or 16th Century Britain belonged to their citizens.

12. it is inevitable in every democracy
that groups will arise who will try to vote out democracy.

I once had a social studies teacher at Augsburg American Highschool in Germany who told us about the balance of power / checks and balances in the American political system. I asked him what would happen if the president had complete control of the Supreme Court or of congress or if the constitution and laws were changed to bypass checks and balances and he said, "well it wouldn't be America any more, would it?"

Well Mr. Leslie, it's happening, and in your lifetime.

Democracy is like a garden that lets many wonderful ideas flourish and grow together, sometimes yielding new species, sometimes weeding out the weaker, but as a garden it has variety.

Social conservatism and religious extremism are not flowers of civilization - they are weeds, and like weeds in any garden they are in danger of choking out the very flowers that make this garden worth having.

If we are unwilling to prune and weed and cultivate our garden, or if we think that parasitic weeds deserve an equal place in the garden, the garden is doomed to fail. We need to rigorously enforce separation of church and state, honesty in our electoral process, and the preservation of checks and balances in our democracy against these very "weeds", and only then will our garden survive to see another season.

16. I was like you
I thought that there was something wrong with me. Something just seemed to be off the way the government was operating. Considering how much I of a democrat I am, I'm surprised it took me so long to wake up.

At a bookstore, on a middle shelf, shoved into the back was a book by Al Franken. I bought it and read it in one night. It was like a cloud lifted and suddenly I got it.

I thought there were some freaks out there who were just sore over the Clinton thing and couldn't let go of what happened with Gore. I read all the Bush is a liar posts and other things. After finding this place, I asked questions, did some searching and they were right. Bush is a liar and a war criminal.

Welcome to DU and welcome to the light.

17. I'm new too
I stumbled upon this site by accident, and am I ever glad I did. I never liked the Bushies going back to daddy bush. Before I found this site, I couldn't believe the lies being spouted in the media everyday about how wonderful the shrub was, and all of them gushing over his excellence. Now, when I read the posts in this site, it just makes me so angry to think that people actually believe bushie's lies and can't see that this country is well on it's way on the highway to hell.

18. If nothing else read late breaking news
My husband always says did you know this, and I say of course, DU. He can't keep up and he reads on line many sites at work.

There are people more far left and more moderate here than me. But honestly, I know we all are thinking the same thing about our country being ruined and it helps to know you are not alone!

What the hell is happening to our country? Denial isn't going to work.

20. We're not in Kansas anymore, Dorothy
This country has gone so far off the right wing deep end that Barry Goldwater would be considered a flaming liberal.

The horrible truth is that Bushco is not at all 'conservative'...they are radical right wing idealogues who have a fascist government in mind. I'm not using that term pejoratively. I'm using it descriptively.

22. A hearty welcome to new DUers
Edited on Wed Feb-09-05 05:27 PM by blue agave
I commend you for having the courage to open your minds and seek the truth. I know that this can be a difficult struggle in itself. Many are not able to overcome the contraints of their misperceptions. They do not yet have the desire to see.

You will find a wealth of information and talent here in the DU family that continues to amaze me.

We now know what went wrong, but we haven't figured out how to fix it yet. However, I believe that our activism occasionally produces results and that keeps me going.

24. Welcome to DU
Al Franken opened my eyes about 18 months ago. So, I can thank Bill O'Reilly for that, as I never would have read Franken without his threatened lawsuit. I joined DU in Oct of 2003 and now have over 5,000 posts.

This is a wonderful source for information and feedback.

26. It's being turned into a corporate fascist state, that's what
You're right - you're not going overboard at all! I get mad about it every day. Pretty soon, if the people don't wake up, we'll be as bad as Russia is now and was.

The fascism extends to the troops. There's no real appreciation from the Bush thugs. First they order some to the inauguration, and then the troops have to pay for lodging and food! :grr:
