I'm not buying the "GOP wavering on AWOL's SS plan" line
Is there anyone here who really believes that congressional Republicans will sink AWOL's SS proposal? There's been lot of stuff online (Kos, TPM) about how unpopular the SS elimination plan is among GOPers but count me as someone who believes that 95% of GOPers in the House and Senate will in the end do whatever Bush and Rove want them to do. Why would anyone expect these people to start acting rationally now? They are cultists and will do what they are told.

It will be up to Senate Democrats to keep SS from being destroyed.

1. because
they have to stand for reelection and defend the plan. If they think its a loser politically, they won't vote for it. At least those in tough districts.

4. Bush has fucked EVERYTING up
and they supported him each step of the way, yet he's still in office and they increased their majority. The full impact of their SS destuctuion won't be felt for a few years and in the maentime they'll just use the media to win again. There won't be this huge backlash. The sheeple will just accept their lower standard of living, buy Budweiser and watch NASCAR.

2. Yeah, What Happens If . . .
they vote with the repigs, thinking ss is "safe," and also that it'll help them politically?

3. I wholeheartedly agree. They throw these things out hoping the
opposition will back down and feel relieved. We can't let them "sneak this through" like they do with everything else. They are expert at producing a sudden victory out of the jaws of defeat!

5. I predict that the Republicans WILL drop the issue
They'll enact some small changes to SS, claim victory, and quit the field.

They're real good at claiming victory for failure. Look at how they spin the war in Iraq.

9. Wouldn't surprise me
Like you said: they claim victory for everything even when it's clearly a failure (as in Iraq like you mentioned). It's really disgusting. Bush has bankrupted everything he's ever touched, so why is he a good President and/or governor? If he wasn't a Bush he wouldn't have even been a governor or zippo in politics.

6. I don't know if I agree
I think there is a certain percentage of Republicans who will vote for this no mater what, like you say, but 95% is probably high. This is a radical proposition, and the more people find out about it, the less likely they are to support it. There are definately some Republicans who are concerned about this proposal. Some honestly see the danger inherent, more worry about the political ramifications.

That said, we have to be vigilent and not let our guard down. Send letters to the editor and to your representives letting them know exactly where you stand, and tell all your friends the score on the SS Scam, and encourage them to write letters.

7. Anyone who is depending on rw "compassion" and reason
is a fool. This SS "reform" has been in the works for 30 years, the only way it will be stopped is by force.

12. Malloy made a good point about this last night
He was saying the reason why BushCo are doing this is because of how F.D.R. was a very rich democrat who invented this and it's the best and longest program ever invented in our history and Bush wants to be seen as an F.D.R. That's why he's pushing this so much and why he used F.D.R.'s image in his commercials comparing himself to FDR and all that. He wants to have some great legacy besides 9/11 because we all know Iraq is a failure even though they're pumping it like crazy.

15. it's got nothing to do with compassion
Edited on Wed Feb-09-05 02:49 PM by imenja
and I have heard no one attribute opposition to Bush's social security reform to "compassion." It is simply political reality. They face reelection and destroying social security can spell political disaster. It is self-interest, nothing more.

19. because this one hits people in their pocket book
It's not a far away war. It effects people's daily lives. Republican congressmen are afraid of public reaction, which is why many don't support the plan.
We can't sit back and wait for Republicans to derail this plan. The Democrats need to be proactive. But there are many more reasons for Bush's plan to fail than succeed.

8. Ed Shultz has been saying the same on his show
Don't be fooled, he keeps saying. Don't let up. Keep fighting. He fears it's just a tactic to take us off our guard and off the attack. Sounds like sound advice. Best to run through the goal then to slow down when you see it in sight.

Pay no mind.

Once all the contributions are in, they will 'see the light' and 'do what's right' in spite of all the 'negative democratic slander'
