1. Harsh story on "Jeff"
<snip> if I may...
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In a letter to President Bush, Rep. Louise Slaughter, a Democrat, questioned why Guckert routinely received credentials for White House news briefings.

Slaughter linked Guckert's case to recent revelations that two conservative columnists who supported Bush administration policies had received government money.

"It appears that 'Mr. Gannon's' presence in the White House press corps was merely as a tool of propaganda for your administration," Slaughter wrote.

The White House had no comment.

The House and Senate press galleries declined Guckert's request for credentials in 2003.

15. The White House had no comment
Asswipes. They need to answer. But of course, their answers are all evasions an lies and propaganda.

Someday maybe we will have a government that is responsible to the PEOPLE (at least one day a year) instead of itself!

2. Most amazing is..............
"Several congressional Democrats have introduced a bill to stop what they termed taxpayer-funded "covert propaganda campaigns" that violate a provision included in annual appropriation acts since 1951.

Under the new bill, dubbed the Federal Propaganda Prohibition Act of 2005, the prohibition on propaganda would become a permanent part of federal law."

The fact that there has to be a law to deter the Bush Administration from lying to the American Public is beyond my comprehension.

Fucked up.

3. W has no respect for the first amendment.
The fact that he is trying to manipulate the press and the public for political purposes defies what our constitution and bill of rights represents.

I don't know if there is any such animal as a conservative journalist with honor and dignity. Brit Hume is another one who needs to be outed for sleaze reporting.

His ID exposed, reporter quits
Question to Bush prompted criticism

By Howard Kurtz
The Washington Post
Published February 10, 2005

WASHINGTON -- A conservative reporter who asked President Bush a loaded question at a news conference last month resigned Wednesday after liberal bloggers uncovered his real name and raised questions about his background.

Jeff Gannon, who had been writing for the Web sites Talon News and GOPUSA, is actually James Dale Guckert, 47, and has been linked to online domain addresses with sexually provocative names. He has been under scrutiny since he asked Bush how he could work with Senate Democratic leaders "who seem to have divorced themselves from reality." The information about Gannon was posted on liberal sites including Daily Kos and Atrios.

Under the headline "A Voice of the New Media: The Voice Goes Silent," Gannon wrote on his personal Web page that because of the attention, "I find it is no longer possible to effectively be a reporter for Talon News," and that he is quitting "in consideration of the welfare of me and my family." Gannon added in a brief interview that "my family has been victimized" and he wanted to "put some separation between Talon News and the White House."

6. Neat story from the The News Journal of Wilmington (Guckert's home)
A former Wilmington resident whose softball questions at White House press conferences have prompted heated criticism from online media watchdog groups has sworn off presidential press conferences.

James D. Guckert, who reported under the pseudonym Jeff Gannon, resigned late Tuesday as Washington bureau chief for Talon News, a conservative Internet news outlet owned by the Web site GOPUSA....

11. CNN does better job than Kurtz...Guckert was denied Congress Access!
(CNN article interviews Slaughter and ties this together with Armstrong Williams and the others...it's an excellent read..amazing Kurtz focused on Liberals going after Conservative "reporter" but this article focuses on an entirely different aspect)

The House and Senate press galleries declined Guckert's request for credentials in 2003.

Julie Davis, chairwoman of the Senate press gallery's executive committee, said Guckert could not demonstrate any separation between Talon News and GOPUSA, a Republican consulting group.

Both organizations are run by Bobby Eberle, a Texas GOP activist. Many Talon News articles also appeared as news releases on the GOPUSA Web site, said Davis, a reporter for The Sun newspaper of Baltimore, Maryland.

12. Yes it was a very good article
The Daily News article (print version linked here) was very economical in getting the essential facts by quoting John Aravosis:

"The issue here is whether someone with connections to male prostitution was given unfettered access to the White House and copies of internal CIA documents. For a family values administration, that's pretty creepy," said John Aravosis, one of the bloggers chasing the story...."

13. Well, the CNN story was posted last night at 11:20 EST
and now 13 hours later, we still only have the handful of stories posted above.
Looks like this story is going nowhere, althoug the latest story from 365gay has an interesting take on Gannon being a Pentagon spy: http://www.365gay.com/newscon05/02/021005whReporter.htm

A man accredited by the White House as a journalist has gone underground after being exposed as a fake, a possible a shill for the president, and perhaps a spy for the Pentagon trying to out gays in the military.

Questions began to circulate within the White House press corps almost as soon as the man who called himself Jeff Gannon arrived on the scene. But, it was not until gay activist John Aravosis, who operates the AMERICAblog Web site, began to probe Gannon's background that some of the mystery became clear....

16. Arundhati Roy
Roy says that we do "crisis" media now. The White House just waits out the crisis and media moves on to the next one.

Today in the "free" Iraq:
Three civilian contractors killed in Baghdad;
10 Iraqi police men kiled, at least 65 seriously wounded;
The Deputy Minister of the Interior was kidnapped;
At least 2 Iraqi soldiers and 1 U.S. soldier were killed, numerous others wounded;
Sistani's senior aide was attacked on the street in broad daylight, shot NINE times

It's like a non story now, because they had "elections". When is reality going to catch up with reality? Last week it was all success for Bush boy because of one election. Election does not a free society make.

17. Loose 'Gannon': White House Reporter Is Really James D. Guckert
http://www.editorandpublisher.com/eandp/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1000796790

Near bottom of page

Dan Froomkin, the Washington Post columnist, said Wednesday in an online chat, "the heat should be on" Scott McClellan: "Why did he call on Gannon? Did they ever pre-arrange anything? Did they have contact with his parent organization?"

Another intriguing issue is his involvement, along with the better-known Robert Novak, Judith Miller, and others, in the Valerie Plame/CIA episode. Gannon's name turned up on a list of reporters targeted for questioning by the federal prosecutor in the case. Froomkin of the the Washington Post wrote last spring that "the reason Gannon is on the list is most likely an attempt to find out who gave him a secret memo that he mentioned in an interview he had with Plame's husband, former ambassador and administration critic Joseph Wilson."

18. That E&P article is really great.
Pretty much hits all the bases including the stuff that only KO covered:

"But Gannon had been obtaining daily White House press passes, a situation that had irked some veteran White House reporters who also questioned his credentials or considered him to be too partisan in his questioning.

On Olbermann's program Wednesday night, however, Milbank said he had seen Gannon with a pass and photo I.D. that certainly looked like it was of the permanent variety."

and closed with this, tee hee hee:
'Olbermann on his TV show Wednesday referred to Gannon as "HBO's Ali G, without the satire."'

Damn, I *love* Olbermann!

24. Criminal Charges?
Correct me if I am wrong. But isn't giving false information to the White House to gain access to the White House --and-- the President a serious criminal offense?

Shouldn't the Secrete Service be swarming all over this guy and throwing him into the dungeon? And with the Patriot Act, couldn't this guy held indefinitely without trial, access to an attorney, and without even being charged; the same way the White House is doing to Jose Padilla?

I think the silence from the White House in this regard is deafening.
