Humvees will soon be prohibited from leaving Iraqi bases without at least makeshift additional armor, a U.S. military official said Wednesday.

"It means some level of armor; not the level of armor that we would necessarily like to have right now," said Lt. Gen. Lance Smith, the deputy chief of U.S. Central Command. Bolton armor was derided in December by an Army soldier in Kuwait as "hillbilly armor" during a televised meeting with U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.

The armor the military wants provides 360-degree protection - including the bottom of the chassis, bullet-proof doors and windows, and ballistic-grade windshields -- as well as air conditioning, to allow the windows to be closed.

Armored Humvees became must-haves in Iraq beginning in the fall of 2003, when improvised explosive devices placed on roadsides were frequently used by the Iraq insurgency
