Gracious letter from John Kerry re: Howard Dean
Just got in my e-mail.

Dear Supporter,

We have a strong Democratic Party--and we need it to be stronger. Strong enough to turn back George Bush's efforts to privatize social security. Strong enough to insist that every child in America has health insurance. Strong enough to elect candidates committed to Democratic ideals at every level of government and in every region of the country.

On Saturday-just two days from now--Howard Dean will be elected as the new chair of the Democratic National Committee. He'll need the ideas, engagement and financial support of the entire Democratic party to succeed.

Let's welcome Howard Dean and give him the groundswell of grassroot support he needs.

http://www.democrats.org/BuildTheParty

Let's send an unmistakable messge to George Bush and his allies: In 2005, The Democratic Party is strong and united.

Again, it is just two days until Howard Dean becomes chairman. Please join me in getting his efforts to strengthen the party off to a record-setting start.

Thank you,

John Kerry

2. More than gracious...it's a rallying battlecry.
I've suspected for some months the two were working more closely than many noticed.

Something's afoot.

must...support...dean....no...must...not...support....kerry...*fritzfritzfritz*

(Wouldn't you love to watch Dean and Kerry reading all this stuff and laughing their asses off, clapping each other on the back and toasting each other in their shared metaphorical smokey backroom?)

Word on the Durbin love. :loveya: My state has TWO hot Senators, thank you. Not one. TWO.

10. Aaah, I'm not worried.
This is such a good idea that the very people who might have been up in arms against one or the other in times past will now be taking credit for it. That's how good ideas work. If they are truly good, others will steal them.

My state has two good Sens. too! I am quite proud of MA. (And proud of our neighboring state Vermont and it's illustrious former Gov.)

Go Unity. Let's stop fighting each other and go out and get the truly bad guys in the *y Admin.

was the rather wry take one of Dean's staff used to describe Kerry and Deans' post primary relationship.

9. Yes, it is good to see the untiy, but...
I got this email too, and I clicked through to web address that they gave. The page is the same form I have filled out before asking for my $50.

Message to the people sending out these emails--
We, the great democratic unwashed, are more than just credit cards. Ask us to do something constructive. I want to support Dr. Dean with more than just a financial conribution. How can I make this happen?

Who can I write? Who can I talk to? Where can I volunteer?

The email list is a great fundraising device, but if all they ever ask if for more money on top of more money, fatigue will set in.

12. Well, if you notice
the contribution is towards party-building, making the infrastructure to make it easier for you to take the actions you want to take.

But really, it's no mystery what to do if you want to do more than a financial contribution. You have to get local. You can talk to your county Democratic party central committee. Is there i precinctman/woman in your precinct? That might be a role you can fill. Who can you write? Your can write your local paper, your Senator, your Congressperson, your Governor -- there's no shortage of issues on which to make your voice heard...

13. I've seen Kerry use the email list to call Congress
and sign petitions.

Those actions were looked upon by some with derision as well.

Nevertheless, the list is not always a money vehicle.

15. I agree. But it's been improving, and JK has deserved a lot of the credit
We are more than an ATM machine. I've often wished that instead of just telling us to donate, the DNC would develop a relationship with us, an ongoing dialogue that lets us participate.

But I think they're doing better...And actually the first evidence I saw of this was in a message from John Kerry.

It was his e-mail (in November?) about co-sponsoring the children's healthcare bill. Since then, the DNC e-mails have been improving; and JK's e-mails in particular are usually more innovative and connect more emotionally.

Your point about how they could suggest other specific ways that members can help, besides spending money, is a good one.

I hope with Dean there will be even more improvement.
