"ACTION PLAN" to help Dean, DNC, Democratic Party (summary & re-post)
Edited on Thu Feb-10-05 03:24 PM by moggie12

This “Action Plan” incorporates ideas DUers came up with in response to my post a few days ago, where I listed some thoughts I had about supporting Howard Dean, and asked for input. I got so many good ideas I decided it was worth the time to do a whole new post.

As noted in the original post, I think everybody should do whatever they can to support Dean. Whether you're a registered Democrat or not -- or whether you supported Dean in the primaries or not -- is completely irrelevant at this point. His success in rebuilding a strong, grassroots-based Democratic Party -- in conjunction with Harry Reid & Nancy Pelosi leading the charge in Congress -- will enable the Democrats to take back Congress in '06 and win the Presidency in '08. AND I'M FOR THAT!!

(For reference, this is my original post:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x1567741
If you want more info about some of the ideas listed below, I’ve cross-referenced the reply # so you can read a more detailed explanation from the original post)

Here's the summary of suggestions:

1) If you haven’t done so already, sign up on “Democrats.org” – Dean’s public statements and any DNC requests for help will come through there.

2) If you can financially afford to do so, make a donation when Dean sends out his first official e-mail as DNC chair and asks for money. The number of donations he gets in response will be just as important as the dollar amount that is raised – it will demonstrate to the media that he has widespread, grassroots support.

3) Contact the media and ask them to cover Dean. For example, replies #7, 13, and 38 suggested:
a) E-mailing Russert, Matthews and other pundits and asking them to have Dean on their shows.
b) Contacting C-Span and asking them to cover Saturday’s DNC meeting. C-span events coverage recommendation e-mail: events@c-span.org

4) Bomb the media with messages of support when they try to minimize/marginalize/smear Dean:
a) If you hear something on TV or see something in print, put up a post on DU so people can zap that particular twerp with e-mails -- post the e-mail link so it’s easy for people to do.
b) Write a Letter to the Editor of your local newspaper -- Democrats.org has a feature that allows you to do this easily (see reply #45 for suggested themes)

5) The post office sells pre-stamped blank postcards for 25 cents each -- everybody should send him a message of support on one of these cards on Feb 12th. Letters would be good, too, but I was thinking it would be pretty nifty if he could wave a stack of postcards around. (These can also be used to send messages to the media, politicians, etc – letters/postcards are taken even more seriously than e-mails since there’s more effort/expense involved on the part of the sender. The Post Office sells them in stacks of 25.)

6) Spread these ideas so more people help Dean and the DNC:
a) Through your e-mail buddy list
b) Through other web-sites you visit (see reply #37)
c) Word-of-mouth to your friends
d) Make-up flyers to give out in public places (see reply #49)
e) Encourage people to register to vote or maybe even to re-register as Democrats if they’re currently registered independent or third-party (see reply #49)

7) Get involved locally: Go to Town and County Democratic meetings, local DFA meet-ups (see replies #3, 5 and 17)

Finally, there was a suggestion for a group nickname for those of us who want to see Dean succeed: “Human Fire Hydrants United”. It comes from a NYT article, which talked about a conversation Dean had with Terry McAuliffe (snip):

"A lot of people came by the table to congratulate him," recalled Mr. McAuliffe, who said Dr. Dean had invited him to what became a three-hour dinner to discuss the party's operations. "And he said, 'No, no, not till the vote's over.' But I did tell him, 'You are about to become a human fire hydrant. You will get blamed for every loss. You will get zero credit for any win.'"

If anybody has any more ideas to help protect Dean from being “p’d-on”, please reply and add on to this post.

Finally, please keep this KICKED so people see it and take part in this effort. Thanks........

21. And kicked AGAIN! And here's how to handle The Scream:
Edited on Sat Feb-12-05 02:10 AM by calimary
They're gonna try like hell to make hay with it while the sun shines. They're gonna try to ram it up our butts.

Let's ram it right back.

What you need to respond - to friends, to provocateurs, to messages/faxes/phone calls/emails/snailmails/postcards/whatevers to your reps OR to the media:

"Oh, you're on about the scream again. Well, you know something? I'M SCREAMING, TOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DEAL with it."

We yank it away from the BAD GUYS and take their teeth out with it. It is therefore minimized as a weapon against us, and won't be nearly as effective as they would have hoped. FLOW WITH IT zen-like, the way they do in jujitsu, and use that energy that they're trying to punch us with, and guide them onward with it - straight off a cliff.

24. This is REALLY important, guys - it's what kkkarl rove would do.
He's credited with the following recommendation:

Don't be afraid to hit them at their strongest point.

Well, the Bad Guys probably think this is pretty great - well worth toying with, some more. So let's use it ourselves, and turn it straight around and aim it down their throats.

2. Become a precinct chair!
Edited on Thu Feb-10-05 02:51 PM by crispini
Or find out who your precinct chair is and help that person -- you can become a block captain, etc. I can't believe this isn't on your list. Precincts are where the rubber meets the road as far as local political activism. Precincts are the base unit of the local Democratic party organization and need to be strengthened and supported in everything they do-- blockwalks, local organizing, phone banking, etc.

Precinct chairs also HAVE A VOTE on who their county party chair is, and they can go to state conventions, etc. Precinct chairs ARE party insiders.

4. Join a local Democratic club.
Old guard Dem activists often participate in these clubs. These club will give you an immediate entree into who the local power brokers are in your party. The club may not be as activist as you like but you can encourage their activism and of course joining the local club does not have to be your only activity.

9. I've been doing google news searches on Dean
every morning. I was thinking of posting a threads of all the LTTE I find against Dean. Think the Dem Party forum would be better since it moves slower? I posted some to individual state forums.

10. Hey, mandyky, great idea
I remember you had great ideas in response to the first post, too.
BTW, how many LTTE's are you finding??

When I post things like this, I usually do it in 3 forums: GDP, GP, and Dem Party. I do it a couple of hours apart since it hits the "front page" at three different times and increases the chances of attracting more "viewers". Anything that's a national media piece that you want people to respond to, I'd put in one or more of those forums. If it's a local, though, I think you're right about putting it in the relevant State forum. Maybe you could also do a post in the State forums asking people to check their local newspaper and see if they see any articles about Dean (if they don't subcribe, most papers have on-line editions people can check). That'd be a lot of work, though.

Thanks for helping with this.....let me know what you decide to do and how it's going....

BTW, are you in KY? I used to live in Prospect (Oldham County)

19. Ha, half the kids I went to HS with went to SUNY Oneonta
Am from Long Island originally -- of the other half, 10% went to SUNY Geneseo (and flunked out - what a party school), 10% to SUNY Albany, 20% to other schools, and the last 10% to jail or the Army.

My poor Chihuahua is still adjusting to the weather up here. She keeps trying to do her business in the garage so she doesn't have to go outside.

Best 4 to 6 years of my life. Oneonta is also a party town. Back in the 70's Suny O and Hartwick had #1 and #2 soccer teams in the college circuit in the US. We ended up with the soccer hall of fame.
Over half of our suny student come from LI and NYC. SUNY O used to be a teachers college, but now is a liberal arts college.

Dean Elected Chair
When Howard Dean was elected Chairman of the DNC just a few minutes ago, I was sitting in the front row, just a few feet away. In his speech, Governor Dean talked about the need for Democrats to never conced a single state, district, county, or precinct.

Click on the link below to read Chairman Dean's plan for the DNC.

Update: Video excerpts of his speech can be found here.
