Clinton looks extremely bad!
Wow, he just gets looking worse and worse. I hope nothing is really wrong with him. It now has been 6 months since his surgery and he just plain looks horrible. I heard a rumor that he is really depressed and lathargic. What is your opinion?

On the McAullife thing. He seemed to be enjoying himself and being with his friends. Always good. I wonder if Hillary and Teresa were there. Too bad Gore and Mrs. Gore weren't there. I did notice he had this scratch on his face. Aw. He had a great speech! And we aren't dead. :bounce:

Not an insult to you at all... I just thought if Clinton's appearance had changed that much from his heart surgery then something must be really bad!

Besides, to be mistaken for Bill Clinton is not exactly an insult.

5. This is pure speculation
A significant % of all people put on a heart/lung machine get small strokes. Is it possible that his heart trouble and surgery might have taken that much out of him?

Again, this is pure speculation and this is not my field. If I am wrong I would love to be corrected on this.

18. When my friend had surgery
(hysterectomy, not as serious as heart surgery) her doctor told her it can take up to a year to completely recover. So, it's not too surprising the Clinton looks tired.

My mom has commented on how he looks, she thinks he's lost too much weight.

20. We expect too much of leaders sometimes
I don't know what kind of surgery he had, but if it was truly open-heart surgery, it would crack his chest open and make eating very hard for a long time. Maybe they have him on a restricted/healthy diet and he does not get to eat good stuff. I think we can agree the man certainly enjoyed good food in his time.

53. I thought so
It was grayish blue tinted and shining down from above, enhancing every wrinkle. Take it from me, when those of us over a certain age lose weight, we wrinkle a little. And those pouches under the eyes are hereditary. I have them, just like my mom and grandfather before me did.

I think maybe we're used to actors and newscasters who have "work done" as they age. BC is aging naturally, and has lost weight. Yes, he has a few more pronounced wrinkles, but I don't think it is a sign of illness.

And that really brings out the wrinkles. You have to consider, though, that the lighting and camera work is C-Span. It's easy to look like crap in bad light. The entire crowd is blue, and the speakers are all a little grey.

29. Two separate issues here
He was on the SOUTH BEACH diet before he had his heart attack. That was actually good, because he lost a lot of the bloat. After a certain age, you have to choose between your face and your ass. He chose his ass, so he has to deal with the face wrinkles, which make him look older.

Second issue: depression is a VERY, VERY, VERY (did I say VERY) common occurence post-heart surgery. It just is. I'm sure he is staying on top of it--it's not like he doesn't have access to health care.

Having your chest cracked open and having some bozo strip veins out of your body and do a patch job on your heart is not a walk in the park. He has earned the right to slow down a little, and look a bit peaked too, for that matter.

This guy is co-chairing the US tsunami fund raising effort, and he is leading the UN effort as well. I think he is doing better than more than 90 percent of heart bypass patients.

He needs to conserve his strength for greater things ahead. I'm hoping he'll follow Kofi Annan at the UN, myself...

Those heart/lung machines are very hard on the body and he did have his sternum cracked open then went and campaigned for Kerry like 8 weeks later.

He looks significantly older and more frail since the operation. There'sno doubt about it when you compare him to the pre-surgery Clinton.

32. I think he looks great
considering the surgery he had. It's normal for him to look thinner. Most bypass recipients lose 20-50 pounds in the first six months after their surgery. I'm sure he is a bit tired, painkillers do that.
Quit knocking the man. You try having surgery like that and then looking like a runway model. GHEESH

59. I wonder if it has anything to do with not being able to campaign
for Kerry until the bitter end.

In addition to all the physical reasons for depression, he might be thinking if this hadn't happened, he could have campaigned, could have made a difference.

Certainly thinking of another 4 years of * is depressing me.

54. I'm worried about him, too. In Davos
Edited on Thu Feb-10-05 11:39 PM by KoKo01
he gave a great talk to an audience, but he has a "tremor" in one of his fingers...made me think of Parkinson's disease for some reason.

It could be he's having an "after effect" of the surgery...and given that he's supposed to be "high wired" maybe he just is having a hard time dealing with that operation. He had many bypasses "Quadruple, I think" and Bypass Patients are warned that "depression" post surgery is one complication. Also sometimes the anesthesia and "heart/lung" machines cause after effects for months.

The tremor in his forefinger worried me though, and he kept scratching his head, like he was trying to push something out of the way, seemed odd body language for him. But, his talk was great although he also seemed a little grim.

I had a good friend who went through a quintuple bypass and I read all the cautionary literature about it that's why I posted. But, Clinton does seem a little off compared to my friend's progress. I don't know. I missed the C-Span thing tonight...just going on Davos over a week ago..where I saw him on C-Span. Could be his jubilant personality took a dive from the surgery and it's going to take him awhile...or there's a complication that developed.
