Kucinich and the usual good guys did their best against HR 418 today.

Sam Farr tried to get the thing amended but he didn't have the votes. Kucinich, McDermott, Woolsey, Watson, Waters, Lee, and the other liberls fought as best they could. 42 Dems voted Republican and seven didn't vote. Eight Republicans voted with the good guys and four didn't vote. The Dems are dramatically outnumbered in the House. The Senate Dems are the only ones who can filibuster. The Secreatary of HOmeland Security is still in the hands of hte Senate (thanks to Carl Levin who put a hold on the matter until Tuesday. If they can find a way to stop Chertoff in the meantime, we'll be in less danger. But they also need to stop HR418 from ever becoming law. If not, we all need to be working on an escape route.
