Rove on Dean
Rove on Dean
Published: February 11 2005 02:00 | Last updated: February 11 2005 02:00

Karl Rove was on best behaviour at Time Warner's inaugural Conversations on the Circle this week in New York - until he was asked about Howard Dean.

Rovesurprised the audience by revealing the existence of a second "Dean scream".

Rove disclosed that the White House had a tape of the scream, which erupted at the end of a speech to the California Democratic state convention in Sacramento on March 15 2003.

Dean, then a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination, declares: "I want my country back! . We want our country back! . I'm tired of being divided! . I don't want to listen to the fundamentalist preachers anymore! ."

Guys we are going to have to defend Dean fiercely. We fight and fight and fight. All I have to say to Rove is, "Bring it on."

1. TURDBLOSSOM?
Edited on Thu Feb-10-05 11:33 PM by Dickie Flatt
But just for the record, Rove - the man President Bush affectionately calls "Turdblossom" - considers Dean a worthy opponent who could be a good chairman of the Democratic national committee.

(And doesn't Bush call Putin "pootie-poot"? What is he, a toddler?)

24. It's all so predictable. Every RW on my local ISP discussion board
says Dean's Chairmanship is the best thing that could have happened to the GOP, yet they hate that he got it. One might assume the fascists would be happy but they aren't. I smell fear.

They fear Dean because he's a populist and he's a centrist, and in this DNC position he's a spokesman with the luxery of not running for office. It allows him a lot more leeway in a lot of places.

Every time the GOP makes a ridiculas unfounded unethical attack on Dean, the DNC will get a pile of money, hopefully, and Dean will be clear, direct and passionate in his remarks.

I'm thrilled, so it doesn't surprise me that the regressives aren't happy.

75. Our next-door neighbors are now leaning that way, too.
They're staunch republi-CONS. But they were of the hold-your-nose-and-vote-for-bush ilk. Overall, they're intelligent and fairly reasonable, logical people. A couple of weeks ago, their kid (knowing I have a Howard Dean sticker on my inside rear window) told me her mom likes Howard Dean. And I'm really not all that surprised.

8. Yes, it was wonderful! When I heard that I knew Dean was the man!
I had C-Span on while I was doing some workon the computer. Didn't know most of the candidates and wasn't really paying attention.

Then Dean got up and started talking and after a few minutes I stopped typing and looked at the TV with total concentration listening to Dean. He was awesome! And, it was the first time I'd seen a Democrat stand up and fight, fight, fight.

It was about time!

Dean is a more polished speaker now and I'm sure the tape will show he's grown a lot since then, but it was my epiphany about Dean and I'll never forget it. He showed honesty, integrity, but courage was the most important thing. It was one that the other candidates didn't show and it was the thing I was most hungry for.

He's a great coach and we're going to love him!

That Rove admits to storing things like this for future mud slinging use, just goes to show what little faith they actually have in Bush.

I mean c'mon. If Bush was that great a President, he could run on his four year presidential history alone. But that they admit to storing dirty tricks to use later, shows they can't win honestly...

Edited on Fri Feb-11-05 10:57 AM by fnottr
I thought it was one of the most inspirational things I've heard in awhile.

EDIT: What the hell is so bad about a politician displaying some passion and emotion from time to time? Have we become so cold and bloodless that this isn't acceptable? People regularly scream their hearts out for insignificant things like professional sports and concerts, why isn't it acceptable to display the same level of passion for the future of the country itself?

What Muslim wants to hear a Presbyterian Minister preach?

What Fundamentalist wants to hear a Buddhist chant?

Nobody wants to have to put up with anybody else’s organized religion.

This is old news!! Tis why thousands of folk picked up off of England and head to the shores of some unknown place and set up "colonies". They couldn't stand being forced to follow the norms of another religion.

Old as the hills Dean's sentiments.

But I guess the Fundamentalist right wing needed a bone from Rove this week seeing as how Bush said he would support Christian issues and changes to the Constitution - not that he would do anything about it. And Rove knows as good as anyone - that you have to feed the animals every so often or they get pernickety. Especially when they are going through the bewilderment phase of having been exploited and they are about to put it all together (that they are chumps).

I doubt the scream will matter. Even the media has appologized for mistating what happened there. Howard has done a great job of making that out to be a fun time.

I'm much more concerned about Rove's unknown strategies. I'm sure he has many, and we don't know what they are! He's a very devious man and will do anything to destroy his enemy!

37. inky winky & spongebob are "gay" because they have to scapegoat
Inky Winky & Spongebob are "gay" because they have to scapegoat to keep their 'Christian' troops motivated and actively 'Christian' and xenophobic. Race doesn't cut it anymore. And these cartoon characters cannot sue. For sure the next inventors of cartoon characters may balk and creating characters that are anything but 'paternal' looking and acting.

So the bullies go after the weak - because they wouldn't dare take on a human being and "out" them. A human could fight back and sue. Just like Iraq. Iraq was weak. Iraq was a 'cakewalk'. You do not see these 'hawks' going after 'hard' targets like human rights abusers in China or Russia or Korea.

Nope - you always go after someone who is not strong but who will serve the purpose of motivating your base and keeping them 'attuned to baser instincts' and in line.

I think the original Christians like Jesus and Peter and all the rest were incredibly strong and brave. And they walked into the hardest places. They just up and walked into really tight situations and they did it every day. And there was nothing easy about it. And many devout (of many religions) do the same thing today. I think of them when I think of Christians. I don't know who these others think they are - but they do not look devout to me!

61. I characterize my Dean involvement in increments, like this:
When I heard him say that he had found an affordable way to provide all children in Vermont with health care, and that it was doable as a country;
I sat up and took notice.

When I heard him speak out against attacking Iraq when there was NO evidence of WMD;
I got out my wallet.

When I heard him say "I'm tired of fundamentalist preahers telling us what to do";
I hit the door, and I haven't stopped working for or speaking for Howard Dean ever since.

The best thing that could happen for America is that Sacramento Speech to be heard by ALL americans.

He's no prophet. He's just a guy with clear vision and a propensity for telling the truth.

43. Rove's Recycled Playbook
What a sad comment on the state of American politics. A man becomes impassioned about his beliefs, and his political opposition can edit him down to a soundbyte to make him look like a lunatic. I'd wager that many apolitical, non-voting Americans have detached themselves from the politics, as a result of the cynicism inherent in our political environment.

It's doubtful that anyone outside of the tight circle of frothing right-wingers - those looking for the perfect scandal to smear democrats with - truly cared about Howard Dean's first eruption. It's even less likely that the average American will raise an eyebrow at the second one.

I see only encouragement in this. We now know that Rove is not the omnipresent right-wing supergenius he has been advertised as being; his bag of tricks seems to be emptying, and he seems to be grasping at straws instead.

48. Yeah--like trying to humiliate the Hollywood stars with cheesy billboards
The only people who will think that is cool are a small smattering of people who march in lockstep with them.

49. The Harder They Try
to publicly resist America's burgeoning outrage, using smear-tactics and media manipulation to put a kind, populist face on the GOP; the more they push their base to the Right, the larger the divide will become between what is accepted as modern commmon-sense and the right-wing's fabricated version of reality.

We are beginning to see tears in that fabric, but I predict that the rifts will increase exponentially, both in size and frequency, in the near future.

As the right-wingers stumble upon their hubris and alienate more of their own, their ranks will thin, and our fight will grow easier. We should not underestimate the benefit of having shunted GOP insiders fighting right along-side us. David Brock and Richard Clarke come to mind.

44. Rove is brilliant...he takes political strategy to new heights
and I sure wish that bastard was a liberal. If he had been working for Kerry, Kerry would have won by a zillion votes.

87. No. A crooked win is no win at all -- it's a shame and a crime.
I'm surprised that there's anyone here at DU who would choose to win by dirty tricks. And saddened.

46. I think the more they hype the scream and call him crazy,
the less people will think of them when they find out otherwise.

People are going to be pissed they were made fools of. Bet you a cup of coffee.

47. They know he's not crazy.
They like him.

This seriously can not go on forever. Dean is going to BEAT them. He's too likable. He's too honest. He makes too much sense.

The Repukes won't be able to keep this up.

50. I've always enjoyed Dean bashing the fundamentalist preachers.
Would that more Dems did, and that fewer cowered.

We aren't going to get anywhere by allowing the American Taliban to remake our society and institutions in the constipated image of their brutalizing, ignorant creed.

Stand up and fight them, or resign yourself to living like sheep!

68. maybe, but we don't have to cheat to win.
For us the struggle goes deeper...we care about people. All these poisonous snakes care about is winning and power and money. So I want to win without losing what we are struggling for- a free educated nation that is prosperous , where the old and weak are not tossed on the curb.

and heading upwards in the fundraising.

Yeah, go ahead Rove, play that speech again. It'll make my day.

whole March 15, 2005 Sacremento speech.

Karl, you are behind the times. Oh, that's right, you are in the Party of the Past.

57. Maybe Dean will scream some more and Rove will have a full library.
Who the hell cares. Dean is a fighter, he inspires me and a lot of others and that is what Rove is afraid of. Rove can say all the nasty things he wants to about Dean, it wont matter. Rove can't fire him, can't vote for him and can't affect his position in the Democratic Party. Dean is great because Rove only personally attacks those he thinks might succeed. A good sign for the Dems.

71. We need more Democrats to be engaging in a fair bit of
Dean screaming themselves. If that's what Rove has against Dean then I agree. "Bring it on" indeed!

Let's break this offensive scream down, shall we?

I want my country back! -- Me too dammit.

We want our country back! -- I know a lot of people who feel that way.

I'm tired of being divided! -- It's wearing thin.

I dont' want to listen to the fundamentalist preachers anymore! -- Amen!

Well so far I haven't heard anything to turn me off.
