It smells, it stinks, the odor emanates from the WH

DEMOCRATS WANT INVESTIGATION OF REPORTER USING FAKE NAME
Democratic Representatives John Conyers Jr. of Michigan and Louise M. Slaughter from Rochester are pressing for investigations into how a Washington reporter who used a pseudonym managed to gain access to the White House and had access to classified documents that named Valerie Plame as a C.I.A. operative. The Democrats wrote yesterday to Patrick Fitzgerald, the independent prosecutor appointed in the Plame case, seeking an investigation into how the reporter, James D. Guckert, who used the name Jeff Gannon, had access to classified documents that revealed the identity of Ms. Plame.

15. Didn't McClellan say he didn't speak to this person
In a thread dissing McClellan, Gannon is defending him somewhat. One of the other freepers responded "Are you looking at the same guy I am?" This was "Jeff's" response.

"Not only do I look at him, I talk to him. The problem with Bush's staff is the media's portrayal of them."

This thread in particular is interesting. The freepers realized that a question being asked about biased news coverage re: Iraq was probably Gannon. He replied in the affirmative. I just find it amusing that in this thread he's railing againgst "biased" reporters. Um, hello!

Here is the transcript of the exchange between McClellan and Gannon from Freeperville:

Q: Scott, I frequently communicate with soldiers stationed in Iraq. And many of them ask me why only the bad news about Iraq is reported in the American media. More than one has told me how demoralizing it is to hear so much about the Abu Ghraib pictures, and so little about the murder and annihilation of American contractors and the beheading of Nicholas Berg. Can I get you to comment on the negative impact our reporting is having on morale of our troops?

MR. McCLELLAN: One, I always try to avoid being a media critic from this podium. I'm here to address your questions.

But let me point out that the President is solidly behind the outstanding jobs that our troops are doing in Iraq. Our troops are performing brilliantly as they work to provide for a secure, democratic and free Iraq for the Iraqi people. And they're doing an outstanding job, and we should always express our gratitude to those who are serving and sacrificing to make the world a better and safer place and to make America more secure.

Q: Okay. But is it time to take the filter off again? Is it time to go around the filter? Because, you know -- because there are men and women that we have sent to defend our country that are hearing nothing but bad news in the press.

MR. McCLELLAN: Your point is well taken. There is important progress that is being made in Iraq. The President talked about some of that progress the other night in his remarks at the Army War College. There are also tough days and difficulties that remain.

There are those who are enemies of freedom who want to derail the transition to democracy, and we shouldn't lose sight of what we have accomplished in Iraq to this point. We removed a brutal regime from power, a regime that, when its economy started going down, went and found seven merchants and tried to blame that on those merchants and had their hands cut off and Xs put on their head. That was the kind of brutal, oppressive regime that has been removed from power. And thanks to the gratitude of some Americans, those individuals came to the United States and received prosthetic hands. And they met with the President the other day. And it's a clear reminder of what we have worked to accomplish in Iraq, and there's more to accomplish as we go forth.

Q: They met with the President, right, Scott. They met with the President in the Oval Office and not one question was asked to those gentlemen about their torture in Abu Ghraib. The first question was about whether General Sanchez was being rotated out of Iraq because of the scandal.

MR. McCLELLAN: I would say the President was pleased to have them come to the White House and he was pleased to visit with them. They certainly had some powerful stories that were an example of the kind of atrocities committed by the former regime.

3. Where Guckert was "trained" for jounalism, NOVAK reporters volunteered
and spoke to the new young recruits. Ed Shultz did a LIVE call to that "Journalism Institute" and the person said it on the air!!! Ed figured out the connection very quickly - I just said to myself - OMG!!

5. If the current attempt at a news blackout on the facts of the case fails
The next stage of the defense of the blivet** cartel criminals will be the ever-popular "bad apple acting alone" defense, which has so far kept their asses safe from the crimes of Abu Ghraib and the other torture emporiums. They'll try to hang Jimmy-Jeff Gannon-Guckert as the lone bad guy. That's going to be tough, since SOMEONE powerful waived all the security checks for Jimmy-Jeff and his fake ID and got him access to Plame info -- not something he could have done alone. But they'll try.

I hope Jimmy-Jeff sings like a bird and survives long enough to name some names we would all like to hear.

Edited on Fri Feb-11-05 05:13 PM by Stand and Fight
If this is swept under the rug like everything else, then this country is truly under the control of the Neo-Cons... These guys MUST be taken down for the crimes that they have committed. There is no way in hell that this can be allowed to stand along with everything else that the Bush administration is guilty of having done.

"Did Bush know?"

12. That's not how I see it.
This guy was a "plant." A softball thrower to go to when the going got tough. A cheerleader in the midst of semi-cheerleaders. If he lets himself become a scapegoat, he's stupider than I thought. It's obvious someone "arranged" for his press pass. With the web sites he's registered, there's no way in hell he'd pass routine muster with the SS, FBI or anyone else. If security is this lax, it's only a matter of time before a terrorist releases some deadly toxin in the White House.

13. Talon News Got White House Media Passes 96 HOURS After Formation
Edited on Fri Feb-11-05 05:32 PM by Vinnie From Indy
This story has everything! Let's see, we got two day journalism course, aliases, planted questions, access to highly secret CIA memo concerning Valerie Plame, gay porn web sites. Just today, Scott McClellan said that Talon News and Gannon were put through the standard vetting process which requires the organization requesting access had to be "publishing regularly". Talon had only been live as a web site for 96 hours prior to getting their credentials. This story, in a world not run by giant corporate media empires, would be HUUUUUGE!
