McAuliffe throwing in the towel?
Just this morning I read about Bill Clinton plugging Terry McAuliffe for another DNC Chair seat.

Then this afternoon I received an e-mail from McAuliffe which said, in part:

"On Saturday when I turn the role of Party Chairman over to Howard Dean - and every day for the rest of my life - I will proudly count myself among the rank and file Democrats who are the heart of our Party."

Sounds like any last-ditch effort he/Clinton made failed to gain any momentum and that he's bowing out.

Whew!!!

4. It's time to be nice DUers
This is driving me crazy. These are real human beings. He's a proud Democrat who's worked hard for the party. I can tell you many differences I've had with him but now's not the time. Let the man have his place and Kudos. He did increase the fundraising effort. He did make many gains. He's leaving...lay off the criticism. It serves no purpose.

5. Thanks. He did his job and worked hard. His farewell e-mail is here.
E-mail from Terry

I couldn't let the final days of my four years as Chairman of the Democratic Party go by without offering you one last message of thanks. I have been deeply moved by all the kind words I have heard in recent days about what we have achieved in strengthening our Party.

And I am always aware that the praise for the remarkable progress our Party has made is really aimed at people like you - those who have stood by the Democratic Party through thick and thin.

On Saturday when I turn the role of Party Chairman over to Howard Dean - and every day for the rest of my life - I will proudly count myself among the rank and file Democrats who are the heart of our Party.

Thanks so much for your passion, energy, commitment and support.

Sincerely,

Terry McAuliffe
Chairman

8. I agree
He got rid of the red ink, he built a great state-of-the-art facility, just under the wire ahead of changes in the way cash could be used, and for the first time, we have organization, a nest egg, and vitality. With those things, you have many voices competing for attention. That isn't a BAD thing.

We're a big tent. We don't need to go lockstep, like the GOP. What we need to do is fight like hell -- in civil fashion -- for our particular point of view, and then, once the dust has settled, work like hell to get D's back in the majority in 06, and take back the WH in 08.

I think Dean will do well. He's spent a lot of time on the ground, meeting with the local yokels. He is comfortable with the infrastructure from the ground up. He's PRAGMATIC.

That's what's needed.
