In Virginia there is only one thing more embarrassing than letting your underwear show, and that is getting in a huff about it
Earlier this week Algie Howell, 67, a member of the lower house of the state legislature, proposed a crusade against letting boxer shorts, briefs and thongs peep over the trouser tops.
He gathered the support of fellow members of the house of delegates for a bill to impose a $50 (£26) fine on offenders for behaving in "a lewd or indecent manner".
"That's why they're called undergarments," Mr Howell told the Virginian-Pilot newspaper. "They're supposed to be worn under something else."
But the bill, which attracted international attention when it was passed by the house of delegates, was killed off by a unanimous vote in a senate committee.
