Who was the last person still in the race with Dean at the end?
I was buzzing past a Catholic station and caught just a bit of a discussion they were having about pro-life, the Democrats, the election of Dean, and something one of the other chair candidates had to say. This last candidate, it was reported, said that he'd been essentiall pushed out because of his stance on abortion, and that the Dems better watch out what direction they are taking. The commentator said that in Dean they couldn't have picked a more pro-abortion and pro-gay marriage candidate.

Then they played the scream twice back to back. Yeah, guys, what does that have to do with anything you just said. Shmucks.

And when I say "Catholic" I mean they seem to be very old school and almost too openly pro-Republican. They advocate the Catholic large family situation, ie no contraception and the like.

But I was wondering who was still in the race at the end. Who would hardcore uber-traditional Catholics have been pulling for? Roemer? Fowler? Anyone know or hear what these folks were talking about?

Thanks for any info.

2. Using a very broad brush
Painting all US catholics as the same is ridiculous. I come from a very large family that is entirely catholic and to a person we ALL vote Dem in any election. Perhaps we are the exception and not the rule, but I find it difficult to comprehend that we are the only catholics in this entire nation that support Dem candidates regardless of the abortion stance.

Pope John Paul himself in an edict in the last election said that it was fine for catholics to support John Kerry in last years election provided you weren't voting for him solely based on his abortion stance. In other words, if you chose to support John Kerry for his stance regarding economic, war, poverty and other such issues, there was no problem.

Yes, we had a few renegade Bishops that made headlines in saying they would not give communion to John Kerry and it was for that very reason that the Pope issued his edict to set the story straight. But as always, the good puppy press buried this fact and millions of US catholics were never informed of this.

But again, please do not paint all catholics with such a broad brush. Not all of us are fooled by * and his evil ways.

5. That certainly wasn't my intention
I wanted to use the word for the Catholic organization it reminded me of, I couldn't remember name of the one that's after John Kerry to get him excommunicated, and I don't know enough about Opus Dei, though I suspect that's along the lines of what these guys remind me of.

I was trying to use as many adjectives as I could to identify them as being part of their own Conservative Catholic ... err... are they big enough within the Catholics to be called a movement?

I know all Catholics are not like this. Not all Catholics are "one issue" Catholics, though I've met folks like that. Annoys the crap out of me. What if, except for that one issue, the candidate is a shmuck!.

There were a decent number of Catholics who were working at Kerry HQ, and I am ELCA Lutheran, so I'm "Catholic-lite" as some describe us. In fact, that's not a bad anology. These guys remind me of the Missouri Synod, the ones who gave my particular kid of Lutheran the official wag of the finger for accepting the Episcopalians into fellowship, considering they ordain... gasp!... gay folk and such.

I've had a Wisconsin Synod guy go ape shit when he found out I wasn't Wisconsin, but instead ELCA. "You guys believe in abortion! You guys believe in gay people." Why, yes, we believe they exist, what's your point? No, we don't "believe" in abortion. What a bizaare way of putting it. We just believe in helping folks through rough times in their lives rather than judging them, is all.

Anyway... we're not all the same here in Lutheran land. So I imagine y'all are the same or similar. So no, I was trying to use a smaller brush. Sorry it didn't seem like it.

3. they wouldn't care since they would support Republicans
while there are anti choice Democrats. those who vote based on the abortion issue do not vote for Democrats. so they would not have cared if it was Dean or anyone else.

4. Roemer, who was disappointingly mute on the 9/11 Commission, and
might have been so as DNC Chair. Didn't make any waves or ask hard, embarrassing questions of Condi and Tenet. Left that job to Ben-Veniste during the public hearings I watched.

I'm relieved that Howard got the Chair instead, and hope, pray that he pushes the Dems to finally ask those difficult, but all-important questions about what Bush knew, and when he knew it before 9/11.

My wife's Catholic and voted for Kerry.
