MSNBC: GOP will "fix" SS "no matter how often the left yells 'Stop!'"
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6960857/

With billions of dollars at stake, a large network of influential conservative groups is mounting a high-priced campaign to help the White House win passage of legislation to partially privatize Social Security and limit class-action lawsuits. Corporate America, the financial services industry, conservative think tanks, much of the Washington trade association community, the Republican Party and GOP lobbyists and consultants are prepared to spend $200 million or more to influence the outcome of two of the toughest legislative fights in recent memory.

The Heritage Foundation, the National Center for Policy Analysis, the American Legislative Exchange Council, and such advocacy groups as the Club for Growth, Progress for America, FreedomWorks, Americans for Tax Reform and the Free Enterprise Fund are now in the middle of the fight.

"Conservatives intend to fix Social Security, welfare and Medicare — the very programs that liberals created. And we'll do so no matter how often the left yells, 'Stop!' " Edwin J. Feulner, president of the Heritage Foundation, vowed recently.

Republican strategists see in both Social Security and lawsuit legislation the possibility of strengthening their center-right coalition. Enactment of the latter could also have the effect of weakening the Democratic Party by reducing the income of pro-Democratic trial lawyers, a major source of campaign contributions.

3. It's not just the "left" however.................
there are enough Republicans breaking ranks to kill this atrocity as well. Real Conservatives HATE this stupid idea of bush's, the deficit is out of control and bush keeps throwing gasoline on the fire.

Sooner or later his own Party is going to have to rein this sick puppy in, the government cannot continue to operate in the red like this.

can't stand ANY of Bush's policies as far as I've seen. He's a former Reagan treasury official. And the Concord Coalition must be doing cartwheels trying to get media attention to the foolishness of Bush's policies too.

Deficits and unpaid for wars lead inevitably to the 'hidden tax' of inflation if not paid for as it occurs.

7. Rather like the intelligence people who got called
liberal democrats for telling the truth because the truth helped John Kerry, I suspect the Heritage Foundation is expanding the "left" to include anyone who disagrees with them, esp. on this issue.

6. BushCo and his corporate pals are going to STEAL OUR MONEY
Edited on Sun Feb-13-05 11:17 AM by nodictators
All of the money in the Social Security Trust Fund belongs to people! None of it belongs to the cited gaggle of corporate thieves and their lobbyists.

Here is a LIE in the posted article:
Every percentage point increase would cost corporate employers about $50 billion annually.

The truth is all of the FICA tax is paid by employees. When a worker is hired or given a raise the employer figures in the costs of benefits such as health insurance, pensions, vacation time, and the employer portion of the FICA tax. So the increases are borne by the employees, not the employers.

Bush gave huge multi-trillon dollar tax cuts to the wealthiest people. Now, he is going to steal from the lower 90% of the citizenery.

Democracy died on December 12, 2000, in the Florida coup.

8. If they do all this and more, sooner or later The People will wake up
When things in America get as bad as they were in the late 1700s (which CAN happen if these bastards keep on getting their way), sooner or later the People WILL wake up and there will be a second American Revolution. The only question is, how long will it take?

11. You're onto something here.
Instead of using the word, "fixing," we throw the term, "neutering" back at them.
The word, "neutering" allows one to imagine being less productive, unable to progress and the like.
Bush is neutering Social Security.
