Senator Boxer to receive bouquet of 5,000 Roses on Valentine's Day!
I was emailed requests to make this a new seperate thread.

====
For Immediate Release

Senator Barbara Boxer of California will receive a bouquet of almost 5,000 roses from supporters and constituents across the country on Valentine's Day, February 14th, as a loving thank you for her recent outstanding service in the Senate. Organized by Stacy Davies of Claremont, California, the roses will be delivered February 14th to the Hart Senate Building office of Barbara Boxer in Washington DC. at 3:30 p.m. EST.

The note included with the flowers will read: "Dear Senator Boxer: You are a shining example of what a civil servant can, and should, be, and we, your constituents and supporters, deeply appreciate your heroic charge to bring accountability, responsibility and honesty back into our government."

Senator Boxer has recently emerged as the leading voice in the fight against the Bush Administration's destructive mandates both abroad and at home. She has disputed the questionable Ohio 2004 election vote, elegantly denied Condoleezza Rice a confirmation vote, and almost single-handedly stood up for the principles of freedom, truth, and accountability we expect from our elected officials. A grand public thank-you is in order

"I was so completely taken with Senator Boxer's candid and eloquent remarks during the Rice conformation hearings--her intelligence and her passion--that I thought it would be wonderful to send her roses on Valentine's Day to show my gratitude," says Davies, a freelance writer and DJ at the Claremont Colleges in Claremont, California. "Coast to Coast Florist (1-888-269-5297) was the first name to pop up on Google. I explained to the company's CEO Art Conforti, that my idea was that people be charged a simple $10 for three red roses that would then be sent, en masse. It didn't take long before he enthusiastically told me he would create the pledge line, set up a toll free number and retrain his reps. After we worked out the final details and I hung up, I was in a daze--it was going to happen!"

"I emailed my friends and all of the liberal web sites I could think of. It was Mike Malloy of Air America Radio who unknowingly provided the next much-needed step in this campaign. The day after receiving my email, he apparently talked about it on the air, with other hosts like Randi Rhodes joining in a few days later."

"In Arizona, a woman named Cynthia Black overheard Mike on the radio that night. Cynthia happens to be a major blogger, with her own diary on DailyKos.com. She posted the story and info, and the emails and phone calls to the florist poured in!"

"Responding to the flood of emails was time-consuming, but I was so grateful for the responses that I answered every one of them. It was important to me that people knew I was just one person, not even an activist, really, who happened to set a wheel in motion. No one backed me, I was with no group or club, and I certainly wasn't a corporation!"

"I received a call from Senator Boxer this past Friday. I told her that the grassroots response had been overwhelmingly positive, that we'd received emails from every state and even a few from abroad. She was gracious and very moved. She said she plans to keep just a few of the roses and will be sending the rest to the VA hospital for the `people who have been casualties of this administration's disastrous policies.' She told me she's looking forward to seeing Secretary Rice again this Thursday and said `Boy, do I have some questions for her!'

If you'd like more information about this wonderful event, please call 562-706-7262 or send an email to StacyDavies aol.com.

======
Please help get this out to your local and alternative media and to other forums. I just put it on CraigsList and Indymedia and a couple of newsgroups and used the DU media blaster to mail it out to the MSM people have entered there. Lets all work to get this covered.

Is there anyone in DC who could get over there to take a picture for us?

What a wonderful, sweet statement.

I bet it will get covered. Human-interest Valentine's Day story, blah blah...and what does 5,000 roses look like? Wow.

Should also send a message to some other Senators....(I really think that positive reinforcement is more effective than just yelling at them when they do something wrong--they get so much of that they must tune most of out after a little while.)

Although I am not an American I see a very good responsible elected representative in Boxer. I buy her a dinner if she ever comes to Malaysia, for standing up for Democracy.... as the only Senator to stand up for the 2004 Election. For standing up for principle in Rice hearing.

Love bows to D.C. security

WASHINGTON - Cupid is working harder than ever on Capitol Hill.

Since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, Valentine's Day around the Capitol complex has become a logistical nightmare for florists trying to deliver bouquets of roses and boxes of chocolate to admired senators, representatives and staffers.

<snip>

In fact, Capitol authorities are discouraging valentines sent to work altogether. "We stress if you don't have to have something delivered here, don't," said Capitol Police spokeswoman Contricia Sellers-Ford.

All of which hasn't deterred the grassroots Barbara Boxer Rose Campaign from ordering about 200 dozen roses to be delivered to the outspoken Democratic senator from California. Boxer plans to donate the roses to wounded soldiers at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

As for that Ferguson asshole who called Barbara Boxer ""one of the dumbest people ever to be elected to the US Senate," well....

SUNDAY STORY
Alicia Robinson
Daily Pilot

January 30, 2005

At 81 years old and with six diverse careers under his belt, you'd think Gil Ferguson had earned his retirement.

<snip>

A career Marine and Republican state assemblyman who represented Newport Beach for 10 years, Ferguson has a lengthy list of friends and acquaintances who read his newsletter and attend his monthly political breakfasts at the Balboa Bay Club. He announced in late 2004 that the annual Christmas breakfast would be the group's last.

<snip>

When he left the corporate world, he and his wife started a home-building company that built their Newport Beach home. And his next venture was to form a political group {Principles Over Politics} that brought together union bigwigs and corporate interests to fight what they saw as the dangerous influence of the anti-growth, pro-environment movement.

<snip>

Ferguson set up monthly breakfasts, inviting speakers who included conservatives such as Rush Limbaugh and Pat Buchanan, political figures including Oliver North and Tom McClintock, authors, journalists and military personnel as well. He also wrote a monthly newsletter of his uncensored thoughts on politics, from the local to the international. Never one to pussyfoot around, Ferguson has had choice words for Democrats — he called Sen. Barbara Boxer "one of the dumbest people ever to be elected to the U.S. Senate" — as well as Republicans — his estimation of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger was "he is no politician, and the Democrats rolled him like some hick that just fell off the turnip truck on the way to town."

from the snippets you provided, was that they decided to say 200 dozen instead of 5,000. 200 doesn't sound like as many.....

Well, Senator Boxer knew they were coming, so assume she and her staff began making arrangements a head of time.

I'm glad to hear this! They'll do a two-fold good thing.

Besides, if these are sent to her office in the Hart Senate office building, it will be equally significant, and impact-full for people in the lobby and the hallways and other offices whose doors open on the hallways, and outside the main restrooms and so forth to see this parade of gorgeous flowers being delivered all day long. It's bound to be talked about everywhere. It WILL be noticed, even if it appears as though nothing much comes of it.

One other thing I GUARANTEE you: There will be other women there, in that building, staffers and even other Senators (AND women on the Congressional side - and maybe even some of the men, too), who either see or hear about this. And even if they disagree with Barbara Boxer, and think she's an infidel or something, THEY WILL BE JEALOUS. I GUARANTEE YOU, at least one or two of them, deep-down, is thinking "gee, sure would be neat if people were sending ME all those flowers..." or "hey, I sure would like a demonstration like that. Wish that were happening to me..." It'll be a little teeny weeny voice WAY down deep that whimpers this, but MARK MY WORDS, it's THERE. There will be noses out of joint ALL OVER CAPITOL HILL on this Valentine's Day. GUARANTEED.

If for NO other reason, the mind-fucking residual benefits of this campaign are incalculable.

BANK ON IT.

I wouldn't be surprised. I remember in high school guys buying their girlfriends stuff and all us girls who didn't have a boyfriend on Valentine' s day were, of course, very jealous we didn't get anything. Very nice. :) Plus, Senator Boxer deserves them all and it's so sweet that she's giving them to people at VA hospitals. *Sigh*

46. An idea of magnitude
Edited on Mon Feb-14-05 02:40 PM by Horse with no Name
This is an absolutely beautiful gesture. I cannot wait to see the pictures.
Just an idea of how many roses--one of our patients had a baby girl.They had 6 sons previously and the dad was so happy and thrilled with a baby girl that he bought his wife 20 dozen pink roses. It filled half of a hospital room and the smell lasted for days.
So needless to say...despite the repugs attempts at discrediting her, Barbara Boxer is coming out smelling like roses!
Nice work all.

On edit: Let me add, this was each of their second marriage and they each had 3 sons previous to the little baby they named "River".:)
