U.S. Soldier "Hanged in Effigy" ??!!??
Edited on Mon Feb-14-05 12:38 PM by TexasLawyer
Here's an e-mail I just opened from Howard Kaloogian, a major RW asshat who runs an organization called "Move America Forward." I am a "member" so that I can keep up with that organization's various plans to marginalize or do in the United Nations, silence dissenting voices on the Iraq War, and carry out other as-assigned missions for the RNC.

I don't know how many members MAF has, but they claim on their website that it is in the millions.

MAF is now targeting the couple in Sacramento who have created a very powerful and tangible anti-war message-- using the image of a soldier who has needlessly died for a corrupt and misguided US policy toward Iraq.

Many people, including myself, see this display as a bold act of free speech and patriotism, as well as the ultimate in PRO-troop sentiments. We love our troops so much that we are actually DOING something about their situation. We are taking time off from our shopping and from our manicures and from our couches where we sit watching American Idol and other mental pablum. We are putting our beliefs out there for the world to see, and we are ready to brave the abuse that is being heaped on us for speaking out. We love the troops and we don't want them to die.

But leave it to RW-er Howard to turn around the Sacramento couple's message. The hanging soldier has been interpretted for the MAF sheep as a hate-filled and disgusting display of animosity toward America and its troops. He calls for a "candle-light vigil" in the couple's neighborhood, which I believe will probably be more akin to a fascist hate-fest. I would worry about the couple's safety in this situation.

This "vigil" really turns my stomach. I hope that any Sacramento-ans (-ites?)who show up will stay peaceful and will see through the RW rhetoric that is SO twisting this couple's message.

What is going on in this country!!!??!!!

Anti-War Couple At it Again!

Second Display of
U.S. Soldier Hanged in Effigy

(Above: Photograph taken today by Move America Forward of a U.S. soldier hanged in effigy above an Iraqi flag. The sign on the soldier reads "Bush Lied. I Died.)

You Can Help Us Fight Back!

Move America Forward Announces Candlelight Vigil
to Support Our Troops in Sacramento Neighborhood
Where a U.S. Soldier Has Been Hanged (Again) in Effigy

(SACRAMENTO) -- The national organization that supports our troops and the war against terrorism, Move America Forward (website: www.MoveAmericaForward.org), has announced a candlelight vigil (7-10 PM on Tuesday evening) to support our troops and to protest the hanging of a soldier in effigy by a couple that resides part-time in the Sacramento area.

The anti-war display hung at the home of Steve and Virginia Pearcy includes a Palestinian and Iraqi flag. This is the second time this week that the couple has hanged a U.S. soldier in effigy. Earlier the couple shamefully hung a soldier by a noose with a sign that read "Your Tax Dollars at Work." The new sign says "Bush Lied. I Died."

Move America Forward supports the right of free speech. However, the right to speak freely does not mean all words or sentiments should be warmly embraced. The hateful messages that undermine our troops should be treated the same as the hate that spews from the likes of KKK members -- we must step forward and make it clear that these voices of hate do not speak for our greater community, and that we will reject them through peaceful assemblies of the community.

WHAT: Move America Forward will conduct a candlelight vigil to support our troops and register our opposition and disgust with the hateful 'soldier hanged in effigy' display at the home of Steve and Virginia Pearcy.

WHO: Residents of the Sacramento Area who support our brave troops. Move America Forward's members (over 100,000 of whom reside in California)

WHERE: In the neighborhood of Steve and Virginia Pearcy
2732 Marty Way -- Sacramento, California 95818

WHEN: Tuesday, February 15, 2005 -- 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM

Contact Move America Forward's Executive Director, Siobhan Guiney, for more information on this candlelight vigil and how you can help.

1. He left some things out
Like the fact the reason this is their second display is that some RW thief stole the first one (they got it on video).

How bizarre that they think anti war messages are the same as KKK hate speech.

2. California - one mountain ridge in from the Coast - is a RED State
and Sacramento is a RED county with three right wing talk stations - it may be Mike Savage's home base (not sure). The "Central Valley" - suburban Sacramento - is Congressman Rich Pombo's District - not Nancy Pelosi's. And Gary Condit's old district is separated from Zoe Lofgren's district by Mt. Hamilton.

The RW thief stole the first effigy while the three local tv stations were videotaping, and the cops were there watching. When the Pearcy's complained to the ranking police officer, he replied "We'll investigate."

This was on Christine Kraft's show on KGO last night.

14. Sacramento isn't a red county
Kerry won here (barely.) Moreover, due to the influx of bay area commuters and the tendency of repub types to move out to gated homogeneous subdivisions in Placer county, it's likely to get bluer over time. :)

17. Sacramento is about half and half.
That said, some shithead tried to run me and my wife off the road with their outsized SUV when we were out by Folsom a few months ago... One suspects my bumper stickers had something to do with it.

Seems to be half yahoo, half normal.

4. I was guessing that something like that happened
to the first display.

There are lots of people out there willing to trespass and tear down a sign or a display in order to silence someone with an opposing viewpoint.

And there are some who are ready to do far worse (e.g. physical violence, death-threats, arson, etc...) to shut up the Pearcys and to chill any plans by others who might want to speak out against the war.

The thing that is most startling to me is that MAF put the couple's street address in their e-mail to people all over America (I'm in Houston, Texas, so this was not ONLY sent to Californians) and on the MAF web site. To me, reading between the lines, it is an invitation to RW crazies to show up before or after the "vigil" so that they can do their darndest.

On RW hate-radio 2 years ago, I heard the talk show host give out the street address of the guy in California who sued to have the yellow ribbons removed from his neighborhood, because he claimed the ribbons were an "eyesore." The show host then suggested, in a not-so-subtle way, that perhaps if this guy's eyes were so troubled by these symbols of patriotism, then maybe his treasonous eyes should be gouged out!!! He said it lightly and supposedly tongue-in-cheek, but I sure wasn't laughing!

These are scary people. Again, I worry about the political climate that can create such ideas, and I worry in particular about the Pearcys in Sacramento.

3. Take the dummy down.
If you are sending a message it pays to make sure the recipient of the message is getting the message you are sending. Think of the “urban legend” about the Vega automobile… the story is that the Vega was not selling in Spain and no one knew why. Then someone figured out that Vega sounds like “doesn’t go” in Spanish. The story is false, but does illustrate a point. The people hanging the stuffed soldier by his “neck” are trying to send an anti-war message that they hope will save troops lives. The message some (many?) people are getting is that they hate soldiers, and are hanging one in effigy.
That they don’t intend to say what others are hearing is not relevant. Take the dummy down and come up with something that is less ambiguous.

Yes, you are of course correct about the model the urban legend was about. It's clear I don't speak Spanish, I guess, and when I tried to recall which cheap little car didn't go very well ... Oh, well.

In any case my point is the same. The message could be stated to communicate better. As it is, it's offending and turning off many of the ones they are trying to reach.

6. Very true
When doing something like that you have to remember how these people think. Going out with a stuffed solider and "hanging it" isn't going to do good. Someone could be there and take a photograph and pass it around the internet like crazy and nobody know what's going on. It wouldn't be a good idea. You have to think like them and get inside their heads (so to speak) to find out how to reach these people who are so far gone. Go to this link: http://www.thedossier.ukonline.co.uk/video_september11.htm and watch the movie "The War Party." It will help you get into their leaders minds and then understand them as well.

7. NOT very true
The signs on the soldier ("Bush lied, I died" and "Your Tax dollars at work") make it CRYSTAL CLEAR that this was a war protest, and a very effective one at that! Look at the publicity they've gotten.

I'm guessing that is why the RW is working over-time to try to slap this couple down, and at the same time to warn others who might be contemplating a similar anti-war display that they do so AT THEIR PERIL.

People protesting our lovely war? Oh, no no no. We can't have that.

34. No, the message is not clear.
"Bush lied" is clear enough. The "I died" is not so clear. Is the poster opposed to the deaths? Observing that such deaths are "just deserts" for the aggressors? What?
Consider if the exact same effigy was seen hanging in Iraq... would your interpretation change?
Clarity is hard, but worthwhile.

8. Purposefully Misinterpreting the Message
That they don’t intend to say what others are hearing is not relevant. Take the dummy down and come up with something that is less ambiguous.

If this couple just put up a sign with the slogan "Bush lied, soldiers died" few people would have noticed. The fact that they combined the slogan with the visual image of a dead soldier is what makes their statement so much more powerful.

It's the primary reason why the press is not allowed to publish pictures of coffins coming back from Iraq. It is also a major reason behind the Bush administration's extreme displeasure with Al Jazeera-- they publish pictures of dead bodies and give people a taste of the real horrors of war.

MAF is purposefully twisting and misinterpreting the message. As with so many topics these days, if they can keep repeating falsehoods often enough and publicly enough, then the public may accept them as true.

15. I'm sure the MFA folks would be terribly upset
By a bad demonstration against their cause. I think the fact that they feel the need to take action speaks to how effective the display is.

The MFA people are also not very bright. They trumpet the fact that they have 100,000 members in the area. When their candlelight vigil in protest draws less than a dozen folks, they will look remarkably foolish. And while I realize that looking stupid is not much of a deterrent for MFA types, it will hold them up to community approbation for being so far out of the mainstream.

13. Yeah! It's Important for guys like Rove and RW media whores
Why stop there? Why not put up billboards with pictures of the soldier's families at their loved one's gravesides with giant bold letters spelling out "IDIOTS" or "STUPID FOOLS". While this is still an America where you have the right to be cruel, insensitive and ineffectual with your political speech, that doesn't mean people have to support your idiocy. Hey, what better way to get on the TeeVee than to put an extremely outrageous and provocative display in your yard and claim to be a liberal. These people should be repudiated by the left not embraced. They are no different than pro-lifers throwing blood or pig fetuses on young women going into clinics.

Do you really think that the soldier display in Sacramento is in any way an insult to soldiers and their families?

The Pearcys obviously care about the troops and would not want to insult them-- just bring them home. They have the courage of their convictions, which is way more than you can say about most of the magnetic "We support the troops" arm-chair and drivers' seat supporters.

If I am correct that they have a "Soldier" in effigy "hanging" in their yard, then yes I consider that insulting. I will concede now that there are other people that will see it differently. I would argue that the inaccurate depiction of how our soldiers are dying and the implication that their lives have been wasted is an incorrect way to affect a change in most people's thinking about the war. I see it as no different than pro-lifers throwing blood or pig fetuses on young women entering clinics. There are many that agree that those are acceptable tactics to use as well, but I doubt that the pro-lifer's gained many converts or advanced their cause by such actions.

16. PSY OPS: Covering up that vets are commiting suicide by hanging.
This charges the keyword 'hanging' with condemnation of war protesters instead of the depressed Iraq vets who are killing themselves. It also is being used to turn out a brownshirt movement against people who dare to show their views in public.

In the last few days there was another sad story of an Iraq vet who hung himself.

Here is another one from last year:

19. Howard Kaloogian & "Move America Forward"
Were, if I remember correctly, the people primarially responsible for inciting various threats against theater owners that planned to show F911, at least until it became clear that all the negative attention was just making more people determined to see the film.

http://www.moveamericaforward.org/Emails/PR20040614-1.html

Of course, Kaloogian blathered about Moore's "right of free speech" but it was clear from the Death Threats many of his "supporters" were giving theater owners, the practical end result of Kaloogian's crusade was to intimidate theater owners. Try to, at least.

I can only imagine what kind of shit is raining down upon this anti-war couple who just had their address broadcast to millions of angry, redfaced, limp-dick rage-addicted freepers.

It must really be something to "love" America so much that you have to stifle free speech, one of her crowning virtues.

Michael Moore is a polemicist, but he is a very important voice of dissent in this country. It is a danger-sign when someone like HK can organize thousands of people to try to silence this voice.

However, since the White House and it's cronies in the corporate media world have ensured that no images of dead soldiers or funerals are permitted to remind the public that actual people are dying in this actual war, perhaps these folks have a point.

Unfortunately the way they've set it up makes it easy for right-wing assholes such as Kaloogian to spin it as "hanging an effigy"... And now if they change it HK and co. can claim that they "won".

Hmmm.

It's times like this where they take too much liberty with the 1st Amendment. Situations like this where the best action is for fellow citizens to take matters into their own hands. How soon before the neighbor's actions are branded a "hate crime"? I also suspect some of our libertarians (the type that would defend mowing your lawn in nothing but jock strap and cowboy boots) will not like this at all.

Excellent news! When I heard about this earlier, I was thinking it wouldn't last long if it were near me.

"I wonder if it constitutes "fighting words".
That is a point that is becoming increasing important to determine..

There are FAR too many rabble rousing, America hating sonsofbitches that have become far too comfortable running their ugly mouths and insulting mainstream citizen values.

There is not a week that goes by, without me regreting we are no longer a dueling society...

There are a lot of bastards out there, that need to be called into the street and "addressed"...

Free speech is one thing....but intentional insults and celebration of destructive behavior should have consequences.

When they come for your idiot behinds, who's gonna be there to speak up? No one.

If I set out to PO and alienate all my neighbors like this guy did, I don't expect people to speak up for me. This guy wanted a reaction, and that is exactly what he got.

Well, new arrival, you know as little about this site as you do about the Constitution, First Amendment law, and capitalization.

It's ironic to me that you mumia-cong media-conformists (aka "lefties") pretend that there are no limits to speech when you are the ones speaking, yet you invariable attempt to criminalize criticism and opposition by characterizing them as an attack on your rights.
Just see this as a simple act of civil disobedience, of the kind that all lefties regard as sacred (when they are the ones doing it).

This pious uproar over the Pearcys' First Amendment rights reminds me of something that happened just after 9-11.

A left-conformist professor at U of New Mexico had remarked that anyone who bombed the Pentagon would get his vote. He allegedly had to go into hiding when the remark was publicized.
The usual suspects at my university then introduced a resolution in the faculty senate denouncing these attacks on the NM professor's "right of free expression" etc.

I spoke up, "Free speech, is it? When almost 200 people were killed there? Very well, whoever brings me this guy's head, in a bag, on my desk, by tomorrow morning, will get my vote. That, too, is free speech; or is it?"

There was an audible gasp and the resolution was eventually watered down to a standard renunciation of violence.

You're welcome, and thanks for posting this story.

Soon the ACLU will arrive on the scene to punish the good deed...

This story bothered me. Natch, the homeowner's display was tastless, crude, anti-American, and just plain stupid. Asking for trouble. BUT...it was his property. He has the right to display anything he wants (wait! put your Bics down!) on his property.

And his neighbors have the right to censor what they see. If the guy had put up a swastika, a KKK outfit or (as someone else said) had hung JKF (you pick which one!) who would defend him? Would the libs be as indignant as the ACLU will surely be?

The defense for the crowd's action could be found in the Supreme's interpertation of "obscene"....obscenity is that the average person, applying contemporary community standards...

Sometimes, we don't need the government to take care of stuff for us. Sometimes we can just do it ourselves. So, yeah, the homeowner had the right to put the stuff up, and the community had the right to take it down. Think of it as locking out the adult channels on the TV in the family room.

During the year long buildup to "Bush's rush to war," some idiot in my neighborhood proudly displayed his French flag. Teh Americans on either side of him prominently placed large American flags right on their property lines, severely overshadowing his whiny little frog flag.

A "US Soldier" was not hung in effigy.

The Bush administration's Iraqi policy based on lies was hung in effigy, and an empty soldier's uniform was the symbol of the damage caused by that policy and those lies, and that's why it reads, "Bush lied, I died."

Falling for the "US Soldier hanged in effigy" crap plays right into the ignorant nationwide stereotype that says, "if you criticize the war in Iraq and the President, you are not supporting the troops."

Do not fall for the BS!

Bush lied I died is a criticism of this administration, not the troops and no one hung a soldier in effigy, they made a statement with that empty uniform that basically said, "look what Bush's lies have done"!

36. why post his address?
I know THEY posted his address, but why are you posting it?

These people published the family's address to make it easy to harass and stalk them for excercising their freedom of speech.

37. You're absolutely right
I forget that this website does attract its share of Freepers. I was thinking that Sacramento area DU-ers might want to show up for the vigil to monitor and keep things under control.

The couple's address is all over the web. But you're right. I shouldn't have posted it too. Shame on me.
